Hello ODK History Lovers

We're lucky that this one survives ... a rare brochure from the early years of the Scott Bonnar Co.
It is beautifully - and professionally - illustrated and it shows the commitment the Company had to
being lawnmower 'Specialists' by the end of the 1920s. The brochure measures 6" x 3".

It would be easy to date this brochure to 1926; given the four Testimonials on the back page of
the booklet. However, these illustrations first appear in newsprint in early 1927; suggesting that this
brochure is more like from that year.

SCOTT BONNAR & SPORT
There is an important observation to be made about the subject matter of this brochure:
the illustrations represent an important ingredient to Scott Bonnar's success - SPORT.
Golf, Croquet, Tennis and Bowls were popular in Adelaide at the time. This reminds us of the
symbiotic relationship between the development of the lawnmower and the popularity of
outdoor games. They grew off each other.

City parklands, for example, were made possible by the invention of the lawnmower.
Lawn Bowls was gaining popularity in South Australia at the time, with new bowls clubs being
formed throughout the State at a rapid rate.

Many residences in middle-class suburbs replicated the popularity of public sport by having
tennis and croquet courts in their backyards. This fostered the demand for residential mowers.
The Scott Bonnar Company started business in the right place at the right time!

SCOTT BONNAR & GENDER
This is a well-though-out brochure demonstrating that Scott Bonnar knew and understood its
market very well. This brochure catered for the sexes, with specific reference to "Ladies" on
the last page. Powered lawnmowers empowered women by giving them independence!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
ODK History acknowledges Geoff Nowak, the Grandson of Sid Bowditch, who has kindly given
us permission to present this historically important brochure here. The brochure is in the possession
of the Roseworthy Agricultural Museum, South Australia.
