New member from Melbourne here :-)

My 70's vintage Victa 2-stroke mower has been on it's last legs for a few years now and I've been spending as little as possible to get it through each season. In any event last week I decided to bite the bullet and bought a secondhand Victa keystart model from e-Bay. It was reasonably cheap, but eBay is always a gamble, of course. It starts and runs fine and I've fitted new blades, spark plug and air filter. The only thing that bothers me a little is that it has a faint low frequency 'whine' when running. For those that have heard such things, it sounds a bit like a car engine fitted with a supercharger. Not having owned or heard a keystart model running before I'd be interested in any comments....it might be quite normal.

If it helps there's a sticker on the plastic cowl, which reads 'KSS201A' (model number ???)

I've made a donation as I'm interested to see any manuals or parts lists that might be available for this mower.

TIA

lambs,

When you changed the blades did you take off the blade plate?

If you did then the bet is that you have not put the blade plate washer back on correctly or did not tighten the nut properly. It has stamped on it nut side on one side and that should be facing the nut.

If the plate is loose you will see the metal underneath the washer starting to get shiny.

Let me know what you find before we further. cheers2

Bruce,

The blades were replaced with the blade plate in place. The plate itself looked in good nick and the retaining nut appeared tight (certainly wasn't loose).

lambs,

Ok can you check for any play in the blade plate as it could be noise from worn bearings. cheers2

Bruce,

Briefly checked for play when I replaced the blades. Nothing out of the ordinary, I thought. Mind you, I wasn't really doing it in a 'serious' way, so will have to do again and be a bit more precise.

I should say that I've worked on/rebuilt/modified all types of engines over the years....cars/motorcycle...2 stroke/4 stroke...single cylinder/multi cylinder. So pulling it down to find the cause doesn't phase me. I planned on a decoke over next winter and given the noise is not too bad (by my ears....I've heard worse) I'll still do that but go a bit further and do a complete strip and check.

Do you have an info/diagrams/specs on this model ??

Thanks

Bruce,

I can't see any info on the powertorque engine in the Victa manuals area. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place (??)

Thanks
