Good Morning Folks,
Been a forum member for a couple of months but never written.
I'm one of the Greenfield brigade. Got an old '80s Tractor 8 with some sentimental value (as silly as that sounds) and bought a HD8 a couple of years ago but I have only seen it once. it's still at my parents place 700km away. I'll get it home one day. Bought it at auction on a whim.
I've been reading through the threads about the chronology of the model. It's confusing at best. If others are interested (and if it hasn't been done before) I'm starting to have a crack at deciphering the serial number from this era. It's such a long number (7 or 8 digits - and it varies!) that I figure there must be code information in there that might be useful.
If others think it's worthwhile, what I'd need is from y'all HD8 owners (and other models up to perhaps the early 80's?) to send me your serial numbers and photos or details of your machine so we can try piecing this together (if there is anything to piece together).
Number on a HD8 is in the top of the main longitudinal member on the ships left side adjacent the pedal ( or it is on mine, at least). By the time they built my Tractor 8 they had moved it to the front of the machine and it became a 4 digit number.
Perhaps we will find that being such a small company they were not exactly 100% organised in they way they did things- but we can try.
I'll send photos of my jalopies shortly- when I figure out how😜

Hi prd, welcome to Outdoorking.
This is the first I've heard of HD8s having serial numbers, let alone where they are located, so you have made an excellent start with your contribution. I'm aware that Greenfield's service department has very limited records that far back, but perhaps they can advance your mission if you make telephone contact. From what I've heard, they seem to be quite helpful that way.
Best of luck with this project - I will be very interested in the results.

G'day prd, here's another for you: ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/06/full-9138-22448-20150621_150537_1280x720.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/06/full-9138-22450-20150621_150622_1280x720.jpg) The Numbers read: 240877 This looks like a date 24/08/77. Maybe? The model: Mini tractor 8hp ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/06/full-9138-22451-mini_tractor.jpg)

Thanks again! A rare bird that one, I think. Not seen one in the flesh. Not sure how long they kept that shape for but I suspect maybe not long. The serial number thing is getting more confused but we'll keep at it. The date idea is a good one but I think your beast is older than that. On the off chance it is still the original engine, the date code on it may help to confirm.
To all you other greenfielders, send your serial numbers pls. Even just the number and a brief description of the animal it is off.
Cheers,

First & only one I've seen, The parts manual engine numbers match the number code on the engine ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/06/full-9138-22459-20150620_181030.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/uploads/usergals/2015/06/full-9138-22460-engine_code.jpg)

Yeah, 11/11/75. That's why I thought the numbers may have been a date code. (240877)

G'day SD, I've been looking at these clues in the IPC for a while. There is a couple of places where these little snippets appear. The thing that interests me is the jump from a 7 digit serial to an 8 digit appears in one short month (look at page 5). This occurs between September (9th month)and October (10th month). I can only assume that the 3rd and 4th digit if it exists is a month code. Either that or they sold close to 10000 machines in a month!! What do you think? Ive tried to find a year code but don't have the raw data (I.e enough serial numbers) to work with. I'd like others views on this. The Old Reds and the tractors seem to follow different numbering schemes. Cheers,

P.S. I think the serial reference on the page above is for items 36 to 40 only - when they went to the removable pedal.
