I have an issue with a 450 series B&S where the Valve seat has come out.I have not removed the valve as yet but there doesnt seem to be any damage to valve or seat.I saw on youtube where a bloke put the seat back in then secured it by punching (peening)around the valve seat.Is this an acceptable solution or is there another way.

Briggs approves of peening in a new seat, and sometimes people do peen the old one back in, though that is likely to be only a temporary fix

I've peened a couple in the last few years and have yet had one come back to bite me in the butt. That's not to say they're gonna last forever, or a couple of years. Carefully and slowly work your way around as per the instructions above. You dont necessarily have to remove the valve as long as it's seated correctly and squarely. The valve will actually help to keep it in position as long as you do it at TDC.

I think the way I will go is remove the valve so I can have clear access at the seat then replace the valve to hold the seat in place like you suggested.For a couple of minutes work, atleast the valve wont be getting in the way of squaring up the seat.The seats must be tuff little buggas I don't know how many cycles the engine has done since it's escape attempt but there isnt a mark on it Thanks for your advice bigted

Don't forget to lap the valve into the seat after peening around the seat. It is just about impossible for the seat and valve to be perfectly concentric after the peening process, but lapping will put this right.

Thanks grumpy .After lapping I am wanting to check on valve clearance but only have metric feeler gauges,I went shopping to get an imperial set but came home empty handed(joy of living in the middle of nowhere) would someone have some metric figures that I could work too or should I head to the big smoke to get a set.The engine is a 9T502 (9 series?) intake should be .005 to .007 exhaust .007 to .009.I found an online conversion calculator but it doesnt really match up with metric feeler gauge markings.I dont really want to go ajusting valve clearance on a hunch and ruin the valve.

I have done some looking around and have decided on getting another set of gauges.I bought the set I have along time ago and only ever set plugs with them really.Time to let the moths fly and get a more practical set.

Intake: 0.13-0.18mm
Exhaust: 0.18-0.23mm
So generally i use a .15 for the inlet and a 0.2 for the exhaust.

I have fired up the mower and it is running well now,I havnt loaded the engine up yet but I can't see that there will be any issues, thanks for your input grumpy & bigted
