Hard garbage was going around here about 2 weeks ago and picked these up in one afternoon.

Repaired the starter and changed a leaky fuel tap on the sports. Started 1st pull even though it appeared neglected for quite some time.

The "Rapier" is actually a "Craftsman". There had been a fire so i replaced the carby, fuel tank and cowl, because they were all melted, and now it is a perfect runner. The previous owner had removed the decompressor and replaced it with a conrod retaining bolt.

Damn, some people have all the luck. The ones thrown out around my way are all basket cases with most of the good bits missing.

I've had a couple of good clean sports come through here in the last couple of years. Do you have trouble finding decent ones up north?
The local tip shop had one a couple of weeks ago, it was a bit rough, no catcher and they wanted $20 for it, which i thought was about $15 too much for what it was.

There's seems to be a huge shortage of any series 70 mowers here.I don't know why.The last one I seen was before Christmas and they wanted too much for them.I'm really trying to find the last of the VC-Sports the Green and the Orange one's that had the G4 carby on them.I got of them when I left Canberra thinking yeah there easy to replace boy was I ever so wrong about that,up here.

My recycle centre wants $20 for all mowers-Good, Bad and Ugly. A catcher is another $5. They used to allow you to strip parts for $5 but that's a no-no now. It's still cheaper than buying from one of the local mower shops. I bought 2 o-rings for the G4 carb inlet manifold and 2 of those brass washers for it and it was over $17.

Just to keep the thread alive here's another hard garbage rescue from 2 weeks ago which i finished off today.
Adjusted the mixture setting on the carb, replaced the bottom oil seal and fabricated a small plate to repair the broken teeth on the plastic height adjustment segment (last photo).

Good job on the height adjuster. Better than original. What did you use for substitute material?

Hi Sparker, its just a bit of 2mm mild steel plate. Drilled some 7mm holes and elongated them with the angle grinder.

Looks like an improvement on the original, bigted, pity it wasn't made from 2 mm steel plate in the first place. Nicely done, too.

Well it's almost funny you mention that Grumpy, because they were made of steel on the earlier models, Plastic then became more widely used and popular and presto.... the result above.

That metal version looks like a fairly poor design, since it is flat rather than curved to allow a constant radius from the locking notches to the bottom pivot. This would have caused the lever to have to flex far more when using the middle notches. I've had my say about Victa's engineering prowess often enough so I won't irritate Victa enthusiasts by repeating it.

So Victa is not the only mower maker whose designs are sometimes crummy?
