Hello
ODK History Lovers
The
Antelope was a 20 inch self-propelled, side-wheel reel mower sold here from the
mid-1950s.
Made by the famous UK firm of
Ransomes, Sims and Jefferies, it was the 'big brother' to the
18 inch
Gazelle side-wheel.
This was a
commercial-grade machine marketed to municipalities, golf courses and contractors.
They proved popular with golf courses in that they were especially suitable for mowing the backs of
bunkers and other steep inclined areas.
The
Antelope was an enduring design, having been manufactured over four decades, with little change,
apart from different power units. Here is a 1960s specification when the Antelope was powered by
the famous
BSA F12 'Sloper' engine.
Here is the original
Mark 1 Specification, reproduced from my
c1954 Ransomes catalogue.
Note that the original engine was a
Villiers Midget 2-stroke. Unlike the 18" Gazelle, the
Antelope would have a steel chassis and solid rubber wheels.
