Can anyone give me some background on this mower? The B&S number is 100708 0129 01 88061325. I know the numbers are telling me the engine is manufactured in 1988, but does the engine belong on the frame?

Picked it up for $40 and it goes like a dream. Blew a little white smoke but that seemed to disappear when I ran it for a little while. No visible oil leaks. I don't think the fuel cap is original, looks like something off an old petrol tin. Only visible rust is on the flap that holds the catcher on.

Yep, that looks original I'd say. You're correct about the fuel cap; the original would have been plastic.

'Craftsman' was an MSAA [Mower Specialist Association of Australia] 'house brand' here for 40 years or so [in the US it's a Sears/Sears Roebuck mailorder brand]. All of the major local mower manufacturers made 'store brand' mowers for them AFAIK.

I'd tend towards giving it a full service [cowlings off and clean out the cooling fins; empty and clean fuel tank and carby bowl; air filter and oil change; blades, bolts and spark plug replacement] before selling it on. A little time, but not much in parts, and much less chance of a comeback.

As Gadge said, totally original, it's a nice model craftsman with the ball bearing wheels, 1 piece U shaped lower handle bar and the big 3.5hp quantum. They generally are a really smooth running engine and have a nice sturdy rigid frame. Overall a very tidy unit and should make a reasonable profit from you $40 investment.
