Hi, I have just aquired a second hand Masport 635 mower. Its recoil starter is broken. Specifically, the recoil mechanism is meant to be attached to the engine block by a shaft. The recoil component has come off the shaft and cannot be re-attached.
I am wondering if anyone can tell me where I might source a new, or second hand recoil unit for this mower? I live in regional NSW (Australia).
Masport 635 Craftsman Briggs and Straton 4 stroke motor (Sorry, can't supply a model number on them motor, as I locate one on the machine).
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Regards, Langdon

Langdon, I need the model type and code to make sure that you get the correct starter. You will find these numbers stamped on the metal casing that covers the motor.

Hi Bruce
Thanks for the pointer about the details being on the cover. I was looking on the engine block itself.
Details are as follows:
Model Type Code 92908 1482 02 78052405

Langdon, Ok now we are getting somewhere. If the starter is one that you pull up to start (vertical) it won't be hard to get a second hand one for about $20.00 + freight. If it the one that you pull out horizontal then that would cost about (second hand) $35.00 + freight.

Hi Bruce
Thanks for the speedy reply. The starter is the vertical pull type. The main question is: can I get a replacement that includes the metal "post" that the starter is mounted on?
If so then we are definitely in business. Price sounds good too.

Hi Bruce Had a look at the post that I think you are referring to (a green Victa mower with a white Briggs and Stratton motor?). The starter on my motor (motor has a different type number from Erik's) is different to the starter shown in Erik's photo My starter (held together here by the pair of vice grips to stop the spring unwinding) is shown in the photo below in its proper position. ![[Linked Image from lindenrow.com.au]](http://www.lindenrow.com.au/bas.jpg) Can you tell me where I can get one of these starters? Langdon, That starter is for a model 100700 and is a left hand thread centre bolt. Did you snap the centre bolt on the starter?

Hi Bruce
That sums it up. I bought the mower (very) cheap with a rip cord that wouldn't retract. Upon investigation I discovered that the centre bolt that is meant to hold the recoil/starter mechanism in place was missing and the "post" that it fits into appeared to be damaged as well (stripped thread perhaps? but it is hard to tell).
It is interesting that the model number on the engine cowling does not match the rest of the motor

Thanks Bruce, much appreciated.
BTW - I figured out why the model number didn't match. There was a cowl from another mower sitting around where I had disassembled the new machine and I mixed it up thinking that it was off the new one.
Regards, Langdon

Hi, I have a similar story to Langdon, so thought it best to continue in this thread. Apologies if this is a no-no. I have acquired a secondhand Masport Craftsman 635x Series 2 from my mother-in-law It is (found thanks to the info in this thread)a Model 90702, Type 0130-01 & Code 86053008 with Briggs & Stratton Magnetron 4 stroke and 18" disk blade cutter assembly (I think). Problems: 1. The pull cord has seemingly disappeared into the assembly (I just have a loose plastic handle) and I cannot see any way to get it out (if it is in there) as the assembly seems spot-welded in place. 2. The blades are in a bad way, probably from being used in an overgrown, uneven rocky garden.... 3. It likely needs a goods service too. Questions: 1. Is there a service manual available for this model? 2. Are spare blade parts still available? I found another thread covering blade parts and it may require a '529578' kit but I wouldn't know if it was 7/8" or 25mm. 3. Are engine service parts available (i.e. air filter, spark plug), if required? 4. Is it worth persevering with this or should I just let her slip away peacefully Thanks in advance

sven nijs, All parts are available for the masport mower. Click here for the Briggs & Stratton Engine Maintenance Schedule Click here for Engine parts list information For more detailed information on how to repair your starter and service procedures then you need to go to parts list and manuals area. I hope that this information will be of some help.
