I'm sure the answer to this question would be somewhere here but I can't work search out.

Which assembly lube would be best for B&S mowers?

It is standard practice for engine assembly to lubricate items such as bearings, piston rings etc. with engine oil. The Briggs manual says oil seals are to be lubricated with engine oil before assembly, but I can't find a direct instruction for what to put on the bearings and rings, so I use engine oil as always. Remember, whatever you use stays in the engine in service, so it has to be suitable for that purpose.

If you are talking about assembling items that require the use of a press, special lubricants may be advantageous.

The old 1981 version Briggs sidevalve workshop manual just says to oil the crankpin, and the piston/rings prior to fitting the ring compressor. Wouldn't hurt to give the mains a wee squirt, either.

It does mention using a 'valve guide lubricant', B&S P/No 93963, but this has been discontinued.
Going by its MSDS, it was a Lead-based metallic antiseize, containing ~70% metallic Lead powder!

Engine oil will be just fine there, too.

What they said ^^^^^..I use molybond also as it stays coated for longer periods when not starting immediately and bonds longer when starting...But yeah,Engine oil, especially when fitting rings. If it runs on oil, then it can be assembled with oil:)

Myself I use the same oil the engine run's on if it's a two stroke I use 2T oil if it's a four stroke I use 4T oil...Myself I have never had any problems doing it that way...
