Hi ODK members,

I love my copy of this book. They go under-appreciated when they come up
for sale - occasionally - on auction sites.

"The Victa Lawn Book" by Pax Lindsay, from the 1970s, is an excellent insight
to Victa and its products at this time. It presents as a horticultural guide book,
but it is clearly a product catalogue for Victa at the same time.

I think these are highly collectable and they sometimes appear on eBay.
They sell at reasonable prices. Here are the covers and contents:-




My particular interest in this book is that it records the expansionist
direction Victa took at this time. Victa became more than a small-mower manufacturer.

THE DOMESTIC RANGE

These professional photographs encapsulate the Victa range of the time.
The two best selling mowers were the Victa Mustang and the Victa Sport.
For me, the Sport in its purple and blue livery was the most handsome rotary of its
time, a sort of Austin Powers 'shagadelic' mower. Here, we go conservative:-



THE UP-MARKET RANGE
The up-market range included the infamous Victa 500 Twin and the Imperial reel mower.



THE PROFESSIONAL RANGE
The professional range included the Victa Utility and Super 24.

THE VICTA BRANDED MACHINES

The 1970s expanded the Victa range to include branded machines.
The consumer was positioned to think of Victa, not just as a mower maker,
but as a supplier to all things 'garden'!

Victa introduced its ride-on range (American) and its commercial Tri-Mower,
a triple head rotary with rollers front and back. It didn't forget bowling clubs either.
Victa was targeting larger acreage owners and professional private and governmental bodies.

ACCESSORIES

Victa covered every detail of the garden.
It had cheap sprinklers, rakes and hand edgers. Victa was everything!



To this day, Victa presents itself as a complete garden company, not the
humble small mower manufacturer that started out in that Concord garage. Victa's superb marketing
wanted us to believe that Victa was - and is - all things to all people.

The rest is history.

Yes, I picked-up my book for 5 dollars on that auction site.
For the record, I better include one more page. It's the page I found
to be of some importance, given it was - indirectly - coming from
Victa. Here is that page:-



NOTE: It's the fourth paragraph. This is the first recognition by Victa of
electric rotary mowers - though the year 1949 is incorrect - it was 1948,
over four years before the first Victa rotary. The page also confirms that
the electrics were offered at 'a reasonable price' and were 'popular'.

All very interesting.
