Hi all,
I inherited a ride on from my farther who got it off his father and its one of the most reliable bit of machinery I've ever owned. I've decided to try and restore the engine and body as I've noticed that lately the poor old girl is starting to leak oil and has a hard time running for more than an hour or so then she's gotta rest for a bit.
I've have a small amount of exp working on small engines but I always read whatever manuals or info I can get before I do anything. problem is I know nothing of the lawnmower besides what I've gotten off the body of the machine. I've looked online and searched the parts lists and manual area of this forum and cant seem to find anything.
Any help or info on this machine would be greatly appreciated.

Hi lawngrub, welcome to Outdoorking.

That seems to be quite an early Greenfield, possibly made soon after the first model, the HD8, which had a horizontal-crankshaft engine. Yours, having a vertical crankshaft, probably has much the same basic design as the various long-shaft models that followed, up until the short shaft was introduced. Hence its parts are probably fairly similar to the Tractor 5, 8, 10 and 11 - in fact most of them are likely to be the same parts. However to get a closer reading on the actual age of your machine, we need the Model, Type and Code numbers for that 8 hp Briggs engine. These numbers are stamped on the cooling air cowl, though they may be hidden behind the fuel tank on yours, on the vertical surface of the cowl shown by the red oval:


If you post that information, we can try to locate the Illustrated Parts List and Operator's Manual for the engine. We can also locate the overhaul information for the engine.

On that vintage of engine, the numbers may be stamped on the cowl above the spark plug.

All we can tell without those, is that it's post-1982 [Magnetron electronic ignition fitted].

The engine was made on 9 November 1983, so the mower was probably made fairly early in 1984. The plant where the engine was made (Plant 12) has long since been closed - at this point I can't even tell you where it was located.

The one that best covers your model is "Briggs and Stratton Service and Repair Instructions 1984", though the later side-valve manual, Part Number 27062, "Single Cylinder L Head Technical Manual", is just about as suitable - the main differences are it also covers post-1984 models, and has less detail on early engines. If you intend to overhaul your engine, in my opinion it is best to do the job with immediate access to the manual.

Hi guys,
I've just started work on the mower and was in the process of pulling down the body and I cant seem to work out how to remover the steering wheel so I can remove the dash part of the shell.

Mine seems stuck fast i've tried twisting it and tapping it from under with a hammer, still not budging. Maybe i'm not hitting it with the hammer hard enough lol.

If the steering wheel hub is stuck to the steel shaft, I suggest you just put some Penetrene or similar on it for a couple of hours, then pull it off with a small gear puller. It can't twist - the hub is keyed to the shaft. A hammer isn't the right tool for the job - you are likely either to damage the aluminium bevel gear on the bottom of the shaft, or mess up the steering wheel.

hi can anyone tell me why my tractor 8 stalls when i engage the cutter have taken deck off it spins free and belt is tensioned right i think
