hi all, i had a range rover with a 12 hp briggs in today with no compression, it turned out to be an inlet valve insert fallen out. Is it worth putting an oversize one in cost wise, it is a sound motor but by the time it is removed and stripped, labour wise I am not sure which way to go, repair or replace, it seems a shame to scrap it, I work on $40 an hour, with machining involved, not sure, cheers

Gday micka,
I have pin punched a valve seat back in, on a small Briggs engine before.
One reason they come out is, the engine block expands due to overheating, for what ever reason.
See what others say on here, for the best repair option.

Is this engine an ohv of an older model? I wouldn't have thought the engine will last much longer if you get the seat to stay put.

If it a side valve I need some part for that size engine or I could donate a block?

I have thought of trying to pin punch it in, last resort because it seems a shame to shelve it over a valve insert but probably expensive to fit a new one, I haven't had this before on a larger motor Agro MIck, thanks I will let you know what he decides, repair or replace

I would punch it back in. Then you use a center punch just on the outside edge of the seat into the alloy block which will cause a small burr to hold the seat in. I do this right round the seat about one punch indent apart. Good as new.

Having a valve seat insert come loose is usually due to overheating, and the usual cause of overheating is grass or mud blocking the cooling fins, though a roughly-treated engine may have a damaged fan, a tenant's improvement to the cowl, a carburetor malfunction, or an intake air leak, any of which can cause the same outcome. In general, it doesn't happen without overheating of the valve/valve insert, which doesn't happen without there being something wrong with the engine or engine installation.

Briggs approves re-inserting the insert and staking it in place, but warns that it should be classified as a temporary repair rather than a permanent one. Nevertheless I believe it is the usual thing for owner-repairers to do, when the problem arises. That does not mean it is cost-effective to do it at $40 per hour, given Briggs' warning that it is a temporary repair. If you charge the owner say, $120 just to stake the old insert back into place, and it falls out after a couple of hours' use, he may bad-mouth you all over town and ruin your business reputation.

Even Loctite 620, the special high temperature one, only goes to 240 degrees C, so the stuff you've used may not be much help depending on how good the heat transfer into the cylinder casting is. However the staking and punching process usually works at least for a time. I'll leave this thread open for future feedback.

Thanks for letting us know what approach you used. I'll look forward to any reports you can make on how it works out.
