Those older Briggs are fantastic engines.. Here are some things to clear up some questions.

1. There is no primer or choke, The engine has a Self Choking "Choke-a-Matic" Carburetor which automatically chokes the engine on cold starts.

2. The little knob does not shut the spark off.. It simply closes the butterfly valve in the Carburetor restricting the air flow so much the engine stops.. That's the theory anyway..

Small semantic point Kori: the automatic choke is controlled by temperature and intake suction. The Choke-A-Matic is a coupled choke, not an automatic choke, so when the speed control is advanced to the Choke position, the choke closes, and you have to open it manually when the engine starts, by moving the speed control from Choke to Fast. So, this engine has a Briggs automatic choke, not a Choke-A-Matic. Incidentally, the Choke-A-Matic is the same system Honda still uses. Not nearly as nice as an automatic choke, but considerably easier to maintain in the field.

I hadn't heard previously that the 110000 series engines did not have a kill switch. Can you Kori, or anyone else, post a picture showing how the engine stop system works in practice? It is an essential safety requirement that after stopping, the engine cannot be restarted just by rotating the crankshaft - it has to be switched on in some way first.

Thanks Grumpy for the detailed response, mower works fine, actually I'm surprised by how good it is, I reckon this would cut through anything. Thanks to Kori, Joe and others as well for helping out. I'm going to try out what's been discussed tonight.

The knob connects with a link to where the throttle cable normally would at the front, Ill get some pics later of how it works and put them up

Thanks Joe, that would be useful. I figured that the link goes to the hole in the end of the speed control lever on the governor base, but I don't yet know how you take the cowl off: do you pull off the plastic knob and leave the whole linkage on the engine, or does the linkage stay on the cowl and you have to reach underneath it to disconnect the link? Also, how does the engine stop work? I had expected the usual kill wire tab on the governor base, but Kori is convinced there is no kill wire on that engine.

there is enough play in the linkages to disconnect either end while removing the cowl....

Thanks Joe. I take it that has to be done by reaching under the cowl while lifting it off? Another difficult juggling job like disconnecting the governor link from a 92908 or 92508 while removing the carburetor and tank?

No, its right there at the front of the cowl, a link pin that goes directly to the throttle wheel of the govenor assy, it really is a cockeyed arrangement though, the slightest part of the unit gets damaged and it either jams or flogs out quickly.

Thanks Chris and Joe, that helps a lot. After waxing lyrical about this mower, i tried to start it tonight and it wouldn't. No setting helped, so primed it through the spark plug hole and starts and keeps running, ran out of light so will have to check carby later.
