hello everyone
Hope we all had a great Christmas and new year. Time to get back into for us here.
I have a slight problem with my drive chain on my 14" it keeps spitting the master link. All sprockets and tensions are correct.
So my question is has anyone used the 415H variety of roller chain as it appears to be ever so slightly more heavier duty.
Cheers
Steve

Hi Stevesandra, I presume this is for a Scott Bonnar Model 45 14" machine.
here is some info on chains...Click HERE
Did you purchase the chain from the OutdoorKing online Store?
The primary chain, (small top engine sprocket to the inner cutter sprocket) is a different chain to the secondary or drive chain. wink

Hello Deejay
Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes for my 14" 45. I am guessing the master link spring clip is old and worn. Hence why it comes off. All sprockets and tensions are spot on. Thanks for posting the link. I am going to grab a 10ft roll of 415H and new master links this week so hopefully that will solve me problems. Have 2 14" a 17" And a 20" so will eventually get around to changing all over to the H chain.
Cheers

Hi again Stevesandra,

I am not familiar with this designation of 415H chain..you did not answer my question, did you purchase this from the OutdoorKing Online Store?
Could you please post some pics of the chain, and also of the chain-case of your Scotty including all sprockets. wink
Instructions for posting photos can be found HERE

I need to see the 415H profile. wink

415H chain is 1/2" x 3/16" x 98L when I googled for some specs, generally used as heavy duty chain for BMX bikes.

Hi Joe,
Thankyou very much for that research mate, I have done the same and think I have found Stevesandra's problem.
The 415H is a slightly heavier duty chain than the standard Scotty drive chain and consequently, the plate thickness is thicker.
This would not allow a standard joining link to be used, because the spring retaining clip would not be able to engage in its corresponding groove correctly, and would spring off in use. wink
The solution would to be IMO, to purchase a suitable joining link especially for the 415H roller chain.

Here are some specs for your info:

# 35 3/8 pitch x 3/16 width
410 1/2 pitch x 1/8 width
410H 1/2 pitch x 1/8 width
# 43 1/2 pitch x 1/8 width
415H 1/2 pitch x 3/16 width
# 41 1/2 pitch x 1/4 width
# 40 1/2 pitch x 5/16 width
# 50 5/8 pitch x 3/8 width

The following is the American National Standards Institute (eg.)ANSI Standard Chain Dimensions:

Chain No. Pitch Roller Diameter Roller Width

Sprocket thickness Working Load

25 1/4" 0.130" 1/8"
0.110" 140 lbs

35 3/8" 0.200" 3/16" 0.168" 480 lbs

40 1/2" 5/16" 5/16" 0.284" 810 lbs

41 1/2" 0.306" 1/4" 0.227" 500 lbs

50 5/8" 0.400" 3/8" 0.343" 1400 lbs

60 3/4" 15/32" 1/2" 0.459" 1950 lbs

80 1" 5/8" 5/8" 0.575" 3300 lbs
Thanks again Joe,
cheers2

thanks Guys for your replies....Sorry Deejay I did not respond to your question. To answer it though no I did not purchase the chain from outdoorking. I had some master links and some offset links here to suit the heavy duty 415 chain which is why I am trying the heavy duty version of the chain. I am guessing the reason why the old chain kept throwing the master is due to old age, upon removal I will attempt a photograph and try to upload soon. Fingers crossed.
kind regards
Steve

Hi Stevesandra, and thanks for the reply. I am looking forward to seeing the pics. I do not understand why you are fitting such a heavy duty chain...maybe the pics of the sprockets will throw some light on it. wink

crikey time flies well my little attempt at fitting heavy duty chain worked, although i think really it was a case of using a good quality master link. I have attempted to download a photograph showing the chain, it is a little bigger. Blackwoods sell the chain for $4.36 a foot. Sprockets look in good nick.
Cheers

Hi Steve,
From that pic I can see the new chain, but would you mind taking some pics of the side view of the chains and sprockets, particularly where the sprocket is not covered by the chain.

In case you are not familiar with it, the instructions for using our forum 'Inline Uploader' can be found HERE
Many thanks mate,
cheers

Sorry for the delay. Ive been in hibernation trying to hide from the world. I have attached a picture of the sprocket showing some naked teeth. I have not used the mower since fitting the new chain as i noticed a bit of vibration and noise which upon investigation has revealed a crack in the top deck. Although small at present it needs fixing. I think i may fit a smaller engine i think 3.5hp is to big.
Cheers
Steve
