Well I got a call from a lady who answered my add on Gumtree and she said she had a victa 18, so I arranged to have a look today and was a bit disapointed at first when i seen it but did not take long to see it was a model 4 (will post more on that one in my "Victa 18" thread later)anyway to cut a long story short she had 3 other mowers she just wanted gone, so me being the nice chap I am obliged by loading them up and bringing them home.

This Commando had the usual checks and started first pull

The Mustang took two pulls

The Pace has spark but has not fired yet, but by looking at the fuel varnish in the tank may need the carby stripping, also by the look of the black soot on the base might not be worth the effort as I might use this base for the Mustang as it has a peice missing from it.

The 18 with the Mark 4 engine has no spark and have not got around to checking why yet.

cheers2

yeah well I will let you know if anything turns up down your way that I'm not going to look at as I will have to stop getting them as I'm running out of room (sheds never big enough) I do intend to start getting more fussy but as for this lot the Commando will pay for my fuel and the mower and a box of beer without the rest cheers2

The Mustang and the M.S.A.A bases are not the same. You might be able to bolt the engine on but there is no way the dress cowl will. Also just curious to know what the engine number is on the VC-Mustang as I haven't got one yet as I'm not sure where it fits in the range of the VC-Mustangs as I'm thinking it just has the red sticker on it not the blue, but I'm curious to find out more. Some closer pictures would also be great.
Thanks.

Bases, OK see some differences now (might have to use the auto drive base lol) will have a look later at the number, the Mustang has the Mark 4 engine not the 18 as mentioned previously. banghead

I thought the auto drive base had a new home? Also don't think they are the same either.

Nice pickup there Jonesy, but the pace and the mustang bases are definitely not interchangable. The mustang has a full crank bolt pattern and the pace has a briggs bolt pattern(same as powertorque but wihout the exhaust cutout).
Having said that, the black soot is common on these and is generally not an indication of how good the motor actually is. The muffler would normally have a deflector bolted to it to direct gases out to the side. Yours has more than likely gone missing somewhere along the way in the last 30 years or so.

The Mustang has the remote primer on it, dont know if that helps any Blumbly? why do they put the engine numbers in such a hard spot to see? I could not see what the engine number is. Are any of the VC bases interchangable with the Mustang? And Bigted the muffler on the Pace definatly does not have a deflector plate, it looks like some thing off a stationary engine, round with small holes drilled in it. The Commando washed up really well just need a new spark plug boot and she will be off to a new owner.

Yeah Jonesy, that's the standard muffler from the era. Salt n Pepper shaker i think they were known as.

This threads a bit old but how did you get on with the Pace???
That dry black soot is pretty standard, more due to jetting than blowing smoke. Its definitely worth a shot at getting it running.

The original mufflers on those motors all had a deflector over the muffler outlet.

What Ive done in the past with the old 4 stroke Victas is just buy a large radius 90deg Galvanized steel bend from the plumbing shop. Screw that in the block then screw the muffler onto it. Instant hot rod.
