Hi guys,
I previously posted a photo wanting information on an old B&S engine and on a few forums was told to look on the cowl adjacent to the inlet port. Unfortunately there were no numbers there so that was a dead end. However today I started to strip back the paint ready to respray the cowl and found the numbers down near the bottom left (from the front) mounting hole, as pictured. Now, can someone guide me as to what 326431 0228-01 7610061 reveals?

Hi aussietrev, grumpy will be able to give you much more info than I, but I can give you the date of manufacture of the engine...It was the 6th of October, 1976. wink
Thankyou for posting this info, as I have not seen the Model, Type and Code in that area on the air cowling before. grin
cheers2

Hi Aussietrev,

That's a nice old 16 HP single from 1976.
Here's the resource below. You be in control.
It includes a nice video!

It was made on 6 October 1976. The plant of origin is unclear since I can't read the digit that would originally have followed the 1 at the end of the Code.

The engine has a displacement of 32 cubic inches or 520 cc, making it one of the largest single cylinder engines. It is of the 6th design generation, and has a horizontal crankshaft, a mechanical governor, a Flo-Jet carburetor, and a belt drive. It has a flange mounting for whatever it drives (rather than engine and driven unit being mounted on a common base), ball main bearings, and a rope starter (not a recoil starter or electric starter). All in all it seems a quite unusual beast. At this point I don't know what the belt drive is for.

Here is the Illustrated Parts List for the engine:

Here is the Operator's Manual:
http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/msowHM-K_ny7tH217FzoPu.pdf

Being pre-1982, it has breaker point ignition, but yours is of an odd type, using a plunger to operate points mounted externally on the engine, not inside the flywheel. It also has a large 2 piece Flo-Jet carburetor.

I suspect you will need to work on that one with the Briggs manual for pre-1984 engines close to hand.

Hi Aussietrev, grumpy and ODK members,

I am astounded at grumpy's access to resources here.
He is the ODK man on all things Briggs.

I do know that the belt drive was for the charging/starting generator.
External points were used on Model 32 series prior to electronic ignition.
The Model 326431 spec. was very common on machines imported to OZ at this time.

All very Briggs.

Hi Jack,

I posted a list of resources for interpreting Briggs data a few months ago in Tech Talk:
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=47946#Post47946

You might find some of it interesting - I think it is the first time a partial list of Briggs plant numbers has been posted on the internet. If you know the locations of any of the missing (closed before 2010) engine manufacturing plants, please post them so they can be added to the list.

There are more closed Briggs engine plants than open ones these days, and more seem to be closing. They now only make OHV and DOV engines in the US - all of the side valve models have been moved to Chongqing. They have announced that they are specialising in higher value activities in the US, which means only premium priced engines, and end-products such as ride-on mowers, snow blowers etc.

Hi grumpy and ODK members,

That work is awesome grumpy!
I wish I would have found it myself . . . and sooner.
ODK is a big set of forums though.

I think aussietrev has all the information he needs.

All very B&S
