hey guya, needing some help on my Rover Rancher 1755 with twin alloy deck

im just wondering how to grease the spindles? im assuming i have to disassemble the spindles rather then there being a grease nipple hidden somewhere?

also does anyone know exactly what size the nut is that holds the blade plate as well as the pully? im struggling to see i cant find the right size. it's slightly to large and would round the nut

any help would be great.
cheers Will

Hi besty, welcome to Outdoorking.

First, the cutter spindles do not have any provision for externally packing them, AFAIK. Pumping grease in would blow the seals out of the ends of the housings and would be a really bad idea. I do not know of a ride-on cutter spindle that is serviced other than by dismantling, cleaning, inspecting, and re-packing with the specified lubricant.

Second, you may not be aware that Rover and Victa did not make ride-on mowers, they bought American ones and re-badged them. Consequently all dimensions are imperial, not metric. You need a set of A/F (Across Flats) spanners to work on that mower.

in my experience John Deere use grease nipples on their deck spindles. i may be wrong but most of the John Deeres i have worked with have had them.

thanks for the mention of the spanners. i was personaly just planning on attacking the deck with a rattle gun to tear it down. ill get some WD-40 on it and take it a little slower.

Will update

When I was a teenager I had a Japanese major-brand motorscooter with a grease nipple on the front hub. When I greased it, one of the oil seals blew out. Very annoying.

It is possible to fit one of the deck-spindle oil seals (top or bottom) backwards so the lip will lift when there is grease pressure behind it, or just rely on some form of labyrinth seal instead of an oil seal. I've seen both methods used, though not on mowers. Mowers are IMO not a good place for half-engineered sealing, because the dust and grass get into everything given the slightest chance.

well after a bit of grief I've managed to get one spindle out on my spare twin deck. nuts were very corroded so hopefully when i get to my normal twin deck it will be easier surprising how much wd-40 you get through...

You might find that Penetrene is quicker and more effective than WD40, but on the other hand, if you have plenty of WD40 and plenty of time...
