Hey guys,

New to the forum, so just like to say howdy and I hope someone can help me out!

Today I picked up a Scott Bonnar supercut electric mower for less than a carton of beer. I bought it sight unseen and tbh I was a little skeptical. I must say I am pleasntly suprised with it's overall condition. I could see that reel was touching the bottom blade so I only gave it a quick run to make sure it worked before handing over my $30. I got it home and got to work removing the reel and soleplate for sharpening when I came across my first problem.

The sprocket for the reel is of some concern as it is different in appearance to some of the other models that I have seen online.

I have included some photos of the sprocket and wondered if it should just come off with a wrench in a reverse thread manner? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Nice model 17 supercut there I wont comment on this personally as I have had nothing to do with them but I am sure darryl will be along here in the next couple of days

Thanks Joe, for the heads up mate, but as you know, I have a Model 17 Supercut electric myself...and never had to remove the reel....I would hazard a guess that it removes in a clockwise direction (left hand thread) which is the opposite to its direction of travel.
My advice would be to give it a try....gently and see how you go....please let us know how you get on, mate.

The sprocket has a flat on it, which looks as if it is intended to suit a spanner. As Deejay said, if it screws off it must be on a left-hand thread or it would unscrew itself in service. Reel sprockets sometimes are designed to unscrew clockwise while a piece of soft wood is threaded through the reel itself to prevent rotation. However the Model 17 was a very classy machine, and I would not be surprised if it had a better way to restrain the reel, such as a hexagon or flats on the reel's axle, or a place to slide a pin through both axle and bearing housing. A picture or two would be useful, showing what is right behind the sprocket, and the reel axle just inside the sprocket-side bearing. If there is nothing there to lock the reel, chances are the block of softwood through the blades is the answer.

Hey grumpy, I managed to get the sprocket off fairly easily with your method. I guess I wanted confirmation from someone in the know before I went ahead and did it. Thanks everyone for your input.

I am amazed at how well built this thing is. The bearing carriers are made of brass of all things and the overall build quality makes me think it will last another 50 years. I'll keep updated with how it progresses.
