In its youth, that decal said Homelite XL Automatic. If you find the model identification plate (the XL Automatic was made for 20 years with variations along the way) you can get an operator's manual here: http://www.homelite.com/service_support/parts_locator

That seems to be the serial number. There should be a model number on that same plate. Homelite model numbers usually begin with UT, though they may not have way back when yours was made.

See if you can find a UT number anywhere on the saw, as well as looking for another number on the serial number plate.

This is that plate. Its the only thing with numbers i can find. I want to find out the year of this machine etc. Is there any chance it has no model number?

I think you need to find out what the "suffix" is, since they refer to it on the plate. I can't get any response from the Homelite model site with XL Automatic plus the serial number. They really want a UT number, but may respond to something else if it's complete.

I tried that in desperation, but it didn't work. Is there a comma after "Model" on that plate? That would make it model, suffix, and serial number. We have serial number, and maybe model (XL Automatic) but we don't have a suffix. However I think there are model numbers for them - did you notice gmax called his a Homelite XL 12?

The Homelite site only lists models with UT and ZR numbers. Try it yourself: http://manuals.homelite.com/documents/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&category_id=102&query=
