The Greenfield system uses large forward and reverse clutches - it does not use a slipping belt as a clutch as smaller tractors often do. The only vulnerability of the belt system I know of, is that sometimes the automatic tensioner in the wheel drive belt doesn't quite take up a notch, and the belt slips on steep slopes until someone applies a lever to the spring-loaded pulley and pulls it backward to engage the next notch. I would expect the owner to do that himself on the rare occasions it is necessary, it is only a two minute job and hardly justifies hauling the tractor to a service center.
I have to wonder whether your dealer actually knew what a Greenfield is and how its drive system works. There are popular machines that use slipping-belt clutches, and in constant heavy-duty service they could consume belts and belt pulleys fairly quickly, but the Greenfield just doesn't work that way.

I would assume that the Husqvarna had a hydro trans in it.

It sounds as if it probably does, Bob. I wonder why the salesman didn't mention the cost of rebuilding or replacing a worn hydrostatic transmission after a few years of heavy use?

Its probably worth going the extra coin and getting a zero turn.

Not my field of expertise, but for 8 acres, if they are fairly open (not a huge amount of maneouvring required) I don't see the need for zero turn. On the other hand if it is all gardens and constant backing-and-filling, zero turn might be a big advantage - and so might hydrostatic transmission. A zero turn, hydro rig doesn't only cost a bundle to buy, it costs another bundle to maintain, and I just don't see what the return is on that investment unless a big chunk of the job is tight manoeuvring. I've seen a contractor mowing a complicated garden on a steep slope with a Greenfield, and thought he was crazy - but I've seen another contractor running around the outside of my multiple-acre local park with a zero turn, and thought he was crazy too. The difference was, one was a private job (the Greenfield) and the other was a city council job (the zero-turn).

Well if you are mowing 3+ acres or so and using a greenfield with 20hp and a 36" cut. Put that up against a 25hp 50" zero and thats about 2/3 or less the distance and time traveled on the greenfield.
Whats the price difference?? Would be under $500, even if its a grand.
Just saying is all. After all, Im not buying it. And I am not even sure I would want a Zero myself, but then i dont imagine myself in the market for a new anything.
