Hi guys,

just wondering how much can i expect to pay for a boring service on a gxv120? (i dismantle the engine and bring it to the place which does the service)?

just wondering if its worth my time trying to salvage an old gxv120. I guess i will then need to buy an oversize piston and rings as well...

thanks!

When I had a single cylinder motorbike done a few years ago from memory it was around $50 when I took just the bore and the new piston, when I dropped it off he said you must take the new piston to be used in as sometimes .010 oversize can be hard to determine with current bore wear and it was easier to use the new piston for measurements and to use that as a guide.

Just last week I rang to quote a rebore on a 12HP Briggs. They quoted me $240. I couldn't believe it. That old donk can sit in the shed for parts. The fellow who has done a couple of rebores in the past for my motorcycle engines is unsure if he can fit a mower casing in his machine.

Just remember that Honda Australia has had a huge reduction in prices on new engines.

looks like i have some hunting around to do.The only thing is, with the gxv120, the bore does not come apart from the main body so i cant see how they would mount the cylinder bore to be re bored (unless they use the head mounting holes), is it the same for motorcycle bores as well?

Also, to reiterate, im basically looking for a motorcycle mechanic?

On the bike I had done (suzuki ts125) the cylinder came off the bottom end like a full crank victas does, just slipped up over the bolts. I never thought of that problem, but in saying that most places that do that sort of work would probably have a way to cater for it....

Yeah mate, i wish it was as easy as removing the cylinder.... Thats why i love the old full crank victas, almost everything is able to be changed/salvaged.

They could maount a mower engine no trouble.
Anywhere off the crankcase. its not like they are doing it with a hammer and chisel and could chance cracking the case.

The main issue is haing room on the table for the depth of the cylinder with the crankcase under it. Its twice as long as a motorbike or victa cylinder.

Will depend if the machine is for all engines or just small engines.

I would highly doubt it would be economicly viable to rebuild the GCV120. You could possibly find a good running used motor cheaper. Will depend on the cost of boring, i suppose. If you do it you will know what you have. What was a good super reliable Honda motor now full of fresh chinese parts.
