Looking at my ride on after 10 weeks of inactivity, I noticed the carby body was loose and tightened the hex screws. Starting it, the motor now runs flat out or not at all, stalling and backfiring at lower revs. The cable and links are okay. Taking the air filter off, I can see fuel spitting back past the choke butterfly. Any ideas?

I also have an old Briggs&Stratton, which is
incredibly difficult to start, and like yours, is spitting fuel out the carby throat.
I suspect that the timing may be out (but not sure on that).
Another symptom of timing problems is when the rope yanks your arm back while starting.

Dave & Jonathan,
You both seem to have a similar problem and it appears to be the key that sets the timing on the engine and this could be sheared. The key should be about 1/2" long by 1/8" thick and all sides should be flat, so if it has a ridge in it the timing will be out.
Check this first and let me know how you get on.

Bruce

"Dave" It sounds like the gasket between the carburetor & the engine (wherethe screws came loose) Is not sealing "screws are`nt tight enough" This will let air in and lean out the "air fuel mixture" which will cause the engine backfire, lose power, surge or hunt, (meaning the engine RPM`s constantly go up & down instead of at one steady speed.) Surging is an indication of "STARVING FOR GAS" which is caused by loose gaskets, float sticking, worn throttle shaft, governor (or-and)throttle linkage binding,(+) The easiest way to check for loose gaskets is to get the engine started, use WD-40,spray some back on the intake gask,or throttle shaft,if it`s loose or worn, you will hear an immediate response from the engine.Try this first, let me know the results, and we can go from there.I check

the board everyday and reply to most of the questions. You can either post the results and use the same topic or you can E mail me at mk.farnam@gateway.net I have some imformation for the other 2 replies you recieved about "TIMING" on these type of engines. But that will have to what until tomorrow. I`ll be glad to help with any problems you have on your lawn equipment (2or4 cycle) "MIKE`S SMALL ENGINE REPAIR"
