Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. I have a very reliable Victa V40 4 stroke mower and the last couple times I have used it, it seems to start in the choke position but when moved to the run position it stops.... I have put in a new air filter, new spark plug, new fuel and new oil. I have taken the bottom bowl off the carby and got a lot of stuff out of it, cleaned it and put it back but still have the same drama. I was thinking it might be some sort of idle issue or perhaps a jet in the carby is blocked?? The mower will run while in the choke position and I can mow the entire lawn with it like that, but obviously I know this is bad for the mower.
Any ideas wiould be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Now I am taking a wild guess at this but I'd reckon the engine is a briggs and stratton..

If this is the case I'd think that the mower needs a carby clean to run properly.

Here is a good informative video on how to clean a typical Briggs carby.

It is not a briggs engine but a mere chinese honda copy, where the bottom bolt comes from the carby bowl, use compressed are to clear any blockage in that bolt hole, that is the main jet. Or if you have a suitable sized pin or needle push the crud out of the way, just take care not to scratch the sides of the hole in the jet (it wont cause that many dramas but will alter tuning a little)

Has anyone done any home maintenance on the mower? The most common cause of lean mixture in Hondas that I know of, is a split gasket on the insulator that goes between the carburetor flange and the intake port. If the carburetor mounting nuts have never been removed, though (same nuts that hold the air filter body), the gasket will be all right, and the only other prospective cause is a blocked jet or (perhaps more likely) emulsifier tube. The emulsifier tube is directly above the jet. You can unscrew the jet with a screwdriver, and it will drop out, followed by the emulsifier. Clean out all the holes, and remember to put the emulsifier back in the right way up (flange at the bottom: you'll see the rub mark where the top of the jet has pressed against it).
