Hi guys

I have probably asked already, I'm having trouble finding someone to spin grind the reel on the imperial, the main issue if finding somone who can sort out the bed knife set up with the rivets. Has anyone got one ground and made up successfully?.

Hi gizmo, yes mate, see the thread here...scroll back to the beginning of the thread. wink HERE
In the meantime, contact your local Bowls Club, speak to the greenskeeper and find out the name of the engineer who sharpens their reels.... wink

Take the whole unit to him and get him to disassemble, check (and replace if necessary) the reel bearings, spin grind the reel, surface grind the knife-blade (and/or replace if necessary), re-assemble and adjust ready to replace in the machine. wink
The engineer will be able to remove and replace the rivets if necessary. smile

hi deejay,

the bowling club boys use the same guy we use. Which means it gets sent up to sydney, only hassle is from what they've told me they wouldn't know what to do with it being the bed knife and rivets so im trying to find somone who has maybe done one before.

looks like he sent that one to seven hills roller mowers, i'll have to give them a try this week

cheers

One of my old cylinder mowers is a Morrison that has a Ransome reel/blade system similar to, if not the same as, what you describe. I was reluctant to pull it apart so sent the entire thing to Seven Hills Roller Mowers in the Sydney western suburbs. The job they did on the sharpening was OK - the reel is good and the bed knife was sharpened while still riveted to the base plate - it had plenty of meat left on it. The main issues I had with them were the finishing (lousy paint job - new paint just sprayed over old paint and rust) and the fact that the unit was mis-assembled with the reel facing the other direction.

I've since rectified the issues and installed and set up the reel though I don't think that I'll ever use them again.

I also own an old SB45 that I'm restoring and for this one I stripped the mower completely, had the reel and bedknife beadblasted and painted prior to sending them away to be sharpened. I used a local Queensland firm and as far as I can tell they did a good job though I haven't refitted them to the mower base yet. There must be someone in the ACT who can do this for you ...

The guys I used were GA Power Equipment Spares (www.gaspares.com.au) in Sodium Street, Narangba.

Good luck with the rebuild,
Chris
