Hi guys.

Have been looking around for quite a while now and have finally bought myself a nice little 45.

The model number is 45 - 12734. Any ideas on the age?

I'm guessing it's a later model - 80s maybe?

It seems to be in pretty good nik. Looks like the blades are nice and straight and have a bit of life left in them (about 24mm) but are due for a sharpen. The B&S 3hp looks and runs clean. The catcher is in good nik too. Everything looks original apart from what looks like a the engine side of the clutch housing and a new throttle cable/handle.

I thought it looked pretty good for $350. Heading out to have a closer look now and a bit of a fiddle. I will post up some pics later on tonight if I get a chance.

I can't give you any idea of its age until I see the pics, mate.

Can you please take some from different angles and a couple of the chain case with the cover removed and some close-ups of the sprockets where they are not covered by the chain....also can you please post the complete string of numbers stamped into the air cowling of the Briggs...this will give us the age of the engine and date of manufacture. wink

Sorry, I thought the age of the mower can be determined by the model number?

I took some pics with my iPhone but can't work out how to get them on the computer so I will try and get some pics after work later on today with my camera and will also post up the numbers of the engine.

It wasn't cutting all that well so I adjusted the blade (gap was way too big) and now it is cutting sweet. The 45 has a better feel than the 33 I think. Seems easier to steer/control. I think it must be due to the shape of the handle?

Congrats on joining the club mate.

Off topic but if you just connect your iphone to your computer with the USB cable it will appear in "My Computer" or "Computer"(if you're running Windows) as a digital camera. Double click the icon then the folder and you'll have access to your phone's photos to copy onto your computer without having to use Itunes.

Looking forward to seeing the pics, and listen to Deejay, he helped me enourmously with my first resto.

OK. Finally managed the pics. Cheers for the tips by the way Davo. Will give that a go one day.

The chains looked a little bit loose to me? Especially the one at the back that attaches to the engine shaft. I think the sprockets may be a bit worn too? Didn't look like a huge deal to me though?

Hopefully that's enough info to work out the age of the mower. Or the motor at least.

Engine was made on 15 June 1979. Both small sprockets on the reel have some wear, the smaller of the two is about worn out. The front chain is slightly slack, before adjusting it with the plastic adjuster you should take it off, hold it on edge by the two ends, and see how much it sags in the middle. The largest sprocket has a bit of wear but could go a bit longer yet. The chains are foul: filthy with grass and grit. That wears them out. They do have a little oil on them, but when you mix dirt with oil it forms a kind of valve-grinding paste.

Thats a good looking mower. I have not seen too many in that condition come up for sale in Perth for such a good price.

Not to hyjack your thread but I am making up some sets of chains at the moment. I have advertised the Cutter Chain for $20 and reckon a full set of chains will be about $50. Which is considerably cheaper than the mower shop. All going well I will fit the first set of chains to my 45 this weekend.

Thanks Grumpy. 1979 - That makes it a year older than me.

Might look at replacing a few parts soon but time is at a real budget atm because I am in the middle of renovating a rental house.

Hi Jarrad. I was pretty stoked when I found the mower. I think it is in pretty good nick for it's age and it's price. Are you saying that you are making up and selling full sets of chains for 45s? Or you are just making yourself a set and selling your old ones?

Hi Jarrad, I have finally found some information on Scott Bonnar chains that I have been searching for, for ages. wink

Primary chain (engine shaft to cutter) : 3/8" pitch
Cutter to Roller Clutch: 1/2" pitch
Clutch to Rear Roller: 1/2" Pitch.
Some members might not be aware that there is a difference between the primary and the other chains.

Yes they are brand new chains. I have purchased a quantity of chain and will be making up a few sets of chains for the 45.

As Deejay said the primary chain is a different type to the roller and clutch chains.

I have a few sets of Primary chain (Goes from top sprocket to roller sprocket) Made up ready to go, with new link and I have advertised these for $20.

Hopefully by the weekend I will have some full sets (all 3 chains) ready to go and I expect them to be $50 - $55. Im not doing this to make money and it is not going to be a long term thing. Just re-couping some costs from my 45 rebuild and offering equally good chains at a reasonable price.

Hi Jarrad, just to set the record straight....the 'primary' chain goes from the top (engine shaft) sprocket to the rear of the cutter sprocket....not to the roller sprocket. wink
