Have an old 3hp BandS I've stripped back and looking at doing some maintenance on it. Wondering what the normal diameter should be before deciding to rebore oversize?

It looks ok with no real scoring but thought may as well check whilst it's apart?

Justo

can we have the model type and code numbers please, some engines have different bores and tolerances. Cheers Joe.

Standard bore of the 80000 series is 2.3750" maximum, 2.3740" minimum. Refer B&S Service and Repair Instructions 1984, page 191, Table 1.

All of the major air-cooled Briggs and Stratton manuals are now in the engine manuals section, which requires subscription, Justo. That is the early manual (Repairman's Handbook for Older Engines 1919-1981), the classic manual (Service and Repair Instructions 1984), the last of the side valve manuals (P/N 270962 Single Cylinder, and P/N 271172 Opposed Piston Twin) and the Vanguard manuals (P/N 272144 Twin Cylinder OHV and P/N 272147 Single Cylinder OHV). We don't yet have the diesel or water-cooled manuals.

Ok thanks.

I've subscribed but iPad can't access on iPads for some reason?

Trying search for an easy way of understanding the timing process as well. Is there a thread on here which goes through it?

Justo, do you mean camshaft timing, or ignition timing?

Because the ignition timing is fixed (set by the flywheel key, in other words) I'm guessing you mean the camshaft timing. This is covered in nauseating detail in Section 10 of the Service and Repair Instructions, 1984, but until you get access to them you can view the same book on line, here:
http://recoveryvehicles.tpub.com/TM-5-4240-501-14P/css/TM-5-4240-501-14P_238.htm

Just use the "next" button at the top of the page to work your way through the chapter.

Sweet thanks

Funny how you read something 10 times before clicking mentally. Was missing the two aligning dots!

Seems very straight forward.

Engines nearly always have timing marks, which for some reason B&S call aligning dots.
