Hi All. I have been having problems with my VSX160 Tornado for a couple of months now - lacking power and it is starting to backfire and becoming difficult to start. Have cleaned air filter, fuel filter, cleaned out carby and installed new plug to no avail.
I decided to donate to gain access to the service manual area so I could confidently rebuild the engine, however I am not sure which manual applies for this engine. I suspect I may have subsribed to the wrong area - I have joined 'Lawnmower parts list and manuals' - should I have joined 'engines' instead of 'lawnmowers'?
Any help obtaining the correct manual(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have subscribed to the correct area, you will find most of the information for power-torque engines (even early ones) relevant to your machine.

I will have a look through and add anything that is absent relating to the VSX 160.

The VSX 160 is pretty much a standard power-torque, with some minor adjustments for the eco-torque era, and a modified intake,

Instead of the usual intake elbow, you should have a straight intake and a large air hose.

I would suggest servicing the carburetor, as per the instructions in the G4 carburetors guide, although your carburetor is an updated LM, you should find this guide fine for the process.

Really it is just a matter of dissembling and cleaning the parts of the carby in fuel, then checking the seat, float, etc. where parts differ from the G4 carby manual, just continue on with the parts you have, and if any seem suspect to you, let us know, and pop up a picture if you are unsure.

The cutout wiring when you are finished is a little tricky, however you will find THIS GUIDE should give you the help you need.

If you are still having issues once that is done, I would look into the decompression valve, if you need to do this, let us know, and we will guide you through.

Hi Mr Davis,
where can I find the VSX160 manual? I subscribed the lawn mowers parts and manual area but I found only old stuff (i.e. 80 and 170cc Victa engines).
Thanks for that!
Max

At the present, there is nothing that is written specifically for the VSX-160, this is mainly due to Victa not releasing there service information individually for each engine, as the process for servicing and repairing a VSX160 is the same as that of a V40 power torque, a V30 powertorque, a VE160, V35, V160 or Eco torque engine.

Occasionally updates are added to cover general changes across the board, and I am currently tracking one of those for you.

I have highlighted the documents you will need for your engine, although they relate to earlier powertorque engines, the process is essentially the same.

there will be the following differences for you:

Your engine is a VSX160, therefore the plastic intake that the carburettor mounts on to is straight, not curbed, however, it still screws on to the block the same way, and attaches to the carburettor the same way, so seal replacement is the same process as you will find in the manual.

Also, your air hose is fatter, unless this is being replaced, it is no different to clean as the smaller one, and the cable and controls, as well as the filter, remain the same as the manual.

You have an LM carburettor, so the plastic tube on the Jet will be fixed into the carburettor, also, you will most likely have a large metal retainer securing the diaphragm, rather than a small clip, this retainer functions the same as the clip, and the carburettor can be serviced in the same manner as the G4 listed in the manuals section.

Before replacing any parts, just check with us that you are getting the right part, in most cases the listed parts will be suitable.

Your muffler is slightly rounder at the front, however it functions and fits on like any powertorque muffler.

the plastic cowling on your engine is a slightly different shape, however it fits and secures like normal powertorque cowling, just remember to remove the top grid to access the mount bolts.

I am currently tracking the LM carby amendment, which I have somewhere at home, It will be posted when the time comes.

If you find yourself confused about anything in the manuals, please let us know, and we can clear it up for you!
