Dear All,
could you please confirm that the letter "C" on the poppet valve should face the main jet also in a VSX160 engines?
I'm servicing a Victa Tornado and I found the letter C on the poppet valve oriented at 90degress on the left hand side of the main jet. Is this correct?
Thanks in advance.

I know this wont be of much help & please First wait for this "to be confirmed" by those that know for sure
Edit
--------
(I cant confirm this, after some searching trying to)

I am guessing you asking specifically to the VSX160 type
which I suspect is a later Eco version (seems to be from below)
so not sure on this at all frown

seems there may be differences from this post here
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=32977#Post32977

maybe a search of the members area if you made a donation might well help
--------

If you suspect its been tinkered with before you then there is chance its set wrong or not optimal

I cant help with orientation but seems you know where you at on that score

From what little I know
for the white one's as far as I am aware pretty much all
are set to " C "....
(no idea on the black poppet's)

from a quick search except the "Vortex" (A) according to Gregory's manual 54 84...(got to find mine)
so a little dated for the VSX

Here's a post on these forums that offers a bit more that "might" answer partly your query
https://www.outdoorking-forum.com.au/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=11656

Wait for one of the old hands to answer thought.
they'll know for sure... I am a noob

Hi Deejay,
thanks for your time.
Unfortunately I'm already a member of the manual area but I couldn't find any usefull info. In the lawn mowers parts and manuals area there are only manuals of vintage engines(or maybe I'm looking in the wrong section..).
I'm pretty sure the poppet valve should be on "C" also in a VSX engine, but I'd like to be 100% sure.
Cheers.

The vsx engine is a powertorque engine but made in china instead of australia and has marginally more power. look for the heading Early Model Power Torque Engine Workshop Manual

yeah maxG thought thats what you were asking but I couldn't confirm it for sure for you..Tried...just from what I've read pretty much all are set to that "C"
but I got doubts when thinking about it being probably eco in someway and later version
(I guess that was possibly your thoughts too & why you wanted the 100% confirmation)

Thanks Joe knew someone would pipe up smile

Cheers smile

I dont see why it wouldnt use the C position, i set all my mainstream 2 strokes up on the c position and never had trouble.

I am pretty sure the black poppet valve can be set in any position as its the same shape around the whole valve.... I cant be certain though until I have another come into my workshop.

Thanks guys!
I set the valve on C and the engine starts and runs well. Not sure why it was rotated before... confused

I could hazard a few guesses as to why? ...seems its position only effect performance some what slightly..
by that I mean it seems it would still work just not optimally for the set up

it would probably start in almost any position is my guess
(although I haven't tried it) and so anyone not knowing is liable to throw it in anywhere (and if they are hand assembled umm QC whats that? smile so you might have been just unlucky to score one to confuse you)

from looking at parts in the shop, the Vortex uses a different (short?) Decompresser (not sure what that is when its at home)
so I can only guess thats "possibly why" they say " A " position
(and thats for the masters here to comment on cause I got no idea)

I "think"? it was said somewhere that it runs leaner in that position A

Anyway again thats ones for the Gurus here

Good to know its firing thought and wish you many short lawns with it smile

Cheers mate smile

All the brackets are very confusing.

Im assuming that you do not know what a decompressor is and how it works.

Do you know what the valve in a 4 stroke engine looks like??
On a victa the decompressor is made up of a valve down the center and it is open at rest to bleed off compression. The big silver dome at the top has a diaphragm in it and when vacuum is applied above the diaphragm it pulls the valve shut.

The vortex uses the "A" position, as it needs to run at a lower speed, this is firstly to help it's claim of quitest mower, and secondly to prevent it overheating in all the extra sheilds and baffles victa suppressed its noise further with.

Cheers
Ty

Gee thanks Bob smile
been in the big smoke, Dirty old Sydney town
so a bit late with the reply.. frown

OK first mate that "novice" shingle is sadly pretty true of me
what little I know is very patchy at best
so here to learn and become better at understanding how they work

I think engines are pretty much a tuned system ...cup in cup out type thing and all parts designed to handle the "right size cup"
in the right order at the right time

so thats was why the Questioning comment on the decompresser
for the Votex, being set to "A" position & it being different?
to the other standard models...
it was just my guess in how the vortex motor was designed to work a little differently...

I had also forgotten it does run at a lower RPM as well
(thanks again to Mr D smile for pointing that out again to me ..Vortex 2700~3250 RPM according to Gregory's 55,87 manual.. I finally found it)

As to "how it works ?" your right
at this point... No not really....

I would have assumed was some how in the Exhaust phase of the cylinder cycle
(de comprssion as in release pressure)

The actual sequence of events between cylinder, it and the Carby.. no, not a complete idea on how it all functions
(I did know it was valve thought)

Thank you again for the explanation,
I got to get this as a working model in the gray matter

Cheers & thanks smile

I'll, read the other posts

Quite possibly there is a working model in this engine you have.
Get a 3/4 spanner and remove it. Look at it, fiddle with it. Put a bit of hose on the fitting on top and suck on it, watch it close.

I actually did try while it was on the mower
for that test for compression, I could feel the valve operate

I do have a diagram in the book of one of the old ones you could disassemble (and repair ~ rebuild) but it would be better to pull one a part... in that regard..

I think for some strange reason you do get a better feel for how things work when you disassemble something & play around with it ..take it through it motions

Thanks Bob smile
