Greetings all,
I have an FS86 trimmer that I inherited from my Father-in-law. I assume it is about 15 years old, plus or minus. Just recently, the trimmer head gave out. Turns out it never had grease in the gear box. I am looking to repair this, and have two questions.
1. Can the trimmer head be taken apart? I have removed it from the main body with the two Torx bolts which clamp the head on. But can I get to the gears to replace them? I can't seem to find a way to remove the string housing plastic piece from the gear box. Any suggestions are appreciated.

2. My second question comes if question 1 is answered with "it is a one piece unit". If this is the case, does anyone know where I can get a new trimmer head unit?

Thank you for all of your help.

Hi John, and welcome to Outdoorking. I've had a look in the owner manual, and it does not tell us whether the gearbox can be dismantled. I've also looked on the internet for spare parts, and only found commonly used spares such as filters, piston rings, clutch parts, etc. I suspect that you have no chance of getting brand new replacement internal parts for the gearbox, and you probably wouldn't want to pay for them anyway for such an old machine. You may find a new gearbox in somebody's "old stock", and you can probably get a second hand gearbox from a mower repairer/wrecker, who may also be able to advise on whether some other gearbox, or entire shaft-and-gearbox, will fit. (An Outdoorking member may also know the answer to that one.) That is about all I can suggest unfortunately.

Grumpy,
Thank you for your thoughts. I have seen the same parts online as well. I will do some searching for some local dealers that may have a trimmer head buried in their old stocks.

Cheers,
John

Does anyone know where I may find a aluminum drive shaft housing for a Stihl FS 86 trimmer?
