Mice had chewed the black primer button, so replaced the white plastic end plate that goes on end of black plastic carb body.

Initially didn't include the needle on reassembly - fuel came out of primer button. Tried again with needle (ball end on float, pointy end in outlet?) but would not start.

Fuel comes out of chamber when I remove the white end plate. However, when I test needle in position it doesn't fall up and down easily within tube. Should this have a coil spring somewhere to give a positive movement against the float?

Fuel is good, and everything else worked fine before I dismantled the carb.

BTW, should the end plate have come with a gasket or any other bits? I was charged �8GBP, which seemed a bit steep.

Hope to hear from someone soon - should have mowed the grass before I took the thing apart!!

There is a line printed on the front of the face of the cap.....make sure it is horizontal when you put it back together. There should also have been a rubber 'o' ring to seal the cap on the black plastic body.
The needle seating is correct the way you have described it. I dont think there is any spring to hold the needle it just sort of sits there!
Have you had the 2 white plastic bits out behind the other cap? (the cam and lifter where the throttle cable connects) Make sure they are back correctly if you have as one of their jobs is to operate the engine cut out switch (a little wire on the side next to the air snorkel fitting)
These Victa plastic carbs are a pain in the arse!!!!!

Yes, the line is horizontal and the gasket is in place.
Re the needle, when I take the plate off and hold it as it would be on the machine, the needle doesn't drop down out of the tube as easily as I would expect. But I guess the gravity pressure of the fuel is enough. Having looked at it again, I don't see where a spring would fit so I don't think it has one.
I haven't dismantled the other bits you mention.
The brass fixing screw in the middle of the end plate that also serves as the main jet - does that need any particular treatment?

Just make sure its clean.....blow air through it but never poke wire into it or anything. There should be a little gauze filter on the main jet as well so make sure thats clean as well.
Make sure there is a nice fat spark at the plug and that the cut out switch isnt on. If it was working fine before you dismantled the carb im sure it is something simple.....I reckon its the cut out switch thats the problem personally. It should feel loose in its holder. Its usually just below the snorkel where it joins the carb. Try wiggling it a bit!

I'll have another look at it. Are these other bits that affect the cut out able to go wrong if all I did was to remove and replace the end cap?
