A while ago I picked up a rover 2-stroke XL, with a Suzuki Engine (I believe from around 1992) I have never got around to doing anything with it, and I don�t know this engine well at all (Cant be too hard to work out though, can it?) I have recently been offered another, and I was wondering if anyone knew the mower, and whether it was worth getting the second one and getting one running? (I have already found a little from the manuals)

gutless? in my opinion quite the opposite, we have one out at the shop that jas the catcher flap tied up and plows through foot high grass as fast as you can push it.

Mr Davis, The Rover 2/stroke was made in Japan and many contractors used them. They were more reliable than the Victa 2/stroke(Power Torque model)and note that they have more power than the Victa(Power Torque).

Well, in that case i think i most defiantly will grab this second unit, its running, but the guy giving it to me is the fella who reckons its gutless (I'm guessing just an issue with his one) so between the two i should be able to knock up something good, which will be useful for getting some of the winter paths cut through the paddocks by the sound of it.
I will pick it up this coming weekend, and inform on how it comes along.

OK, so the Second one is arriving this weekend, and i have just aquired the repair manual for this engine, so i think i might move this one up the priority list.

I am looking at purchasing one of these where the starter mechanism is broken. Do you know if there are still any spares available for these mowers?

There are parts for the starter in the olnline store: Rover/Suzuki Engine Parts There is one workshop manual for this engine in the manuals section, and i have a second one i will be providing for the manuals section shortly.

in my opinion, in good order they are still one of the best mowers around, even though they have age on them. i have nine, two goers and the rest i will do up, they are the one mower i keep looking for and don't part with, i love em, cheers micka

I'm really starting to get that impression, i was going to fix the 2 i have, keep 1 and sell the other, but i'm considering maybe both for me!
As for the age on them, released 92, so not to bad, in fact that would make them the youngest ones i'm interested in keeping, i still think 67-84 was the great period for both Victa & Briggs, and many engines in general.
The newer they get, the greater they aint!

when you go to start them check and make sure the choke butterfly is fully closed, sometimes the adjustment gets out a bit and the choke is closing but not fully, this can be a pain trying to start them, and is pretty common

I ended up getting the lawn mower, it is still in great condition except that the starter mechanism has been removed. I just wrapped a rope around it and pulled it that way to get it started. I would like to get it sorted back to the original mechanism but the guy threw the parts out If there is anybody that would like to sell me a used complete starting mechanism please let me know. I have seen the new parts but not sure what is all needed. I was also wondering about the throttle, the engine stays at the same RPM or does not run, is this correct? Should you be able to adjust the RPM via the throttle. I have the same problem with the butterfly in the carbie not closing all the way when the choke is on, but when I manually push it closed all the way it starts up first time.

I have my eye on one of these at the local tip, if its still there next time iI'm out that way, I will buy it, for parts, as i dont need the starter, I would be happy to sell that to you.

I think these are quit interesting to look at.They look a bit like a four stroke.That'll trick some people.I can see many arguments over a beer and BBQ with that.

they have quite an interesting design too, the head, cylinser & 1/2 the crank case are cast integral, so theres less seams!

I now have three of them I got one a week or so back with no wheels and no starter rope, it hasn't been run for a while but I think with a carb clean it would run well

Ok so I actually used one of mine for the first time today, the one I got just recently, I slapped on some wheels from an old rover 4 stroke off my scrap pile, put in a new rope, cleaned the carb out (these seem to like caking on dried out fuel in the bowl) cleaned out the jet and took her for a spin.
it runs smoother than a victa twin, took down any grass I threw at it without it even trying hard on the govenor and seems very economical.
My other one which I have used must need a good tune as this one is really good. It is one of the late model ones with the new steel type rover base.

They are a pretty powerfull machine Darryl, to be honest, Now that I have one of mine up, I doubt I'll be bothering to go ahead with my upgrade plans for the Psyco Slasher (The Mod Contessa In the photo Gallery, Whitch Redeye Gave Me)
I have not forund anything too hard fro it yet, It just takes on the long paddock grass as if it was mowing a suburban block!
