PeterS,
I would start with these items first:
1. Check fuel flow from the tank to the carby. If it is very slow replace the fuel tap and check that the vent in the cap is clear as well.
2. Check that you have a nice blue spark on the spark plug. If not it could be the electronic module that needs to be replaced.
3. Remove the muffler and check to see if the exhaust port is blocked up with carbon. If so clean out the port and also check the muffler is blocked.
4. Check ring gap with a screw driver by pressing on the ring and if you have too much movement replace the rings.
