hi every one, sorry it's been a while since a post.
i finally got the last mower piece to complete my green four star(i only dreamed of coming across one of these).
i have the side thrower and catcher, front and rear flaps and now finally the badge.the chassis is about to be sand blasted and repainted, engine already done.the only piece left is the owners manual which shouldn't be too hard to get.
the other mower pic is one i picked up from the scrap metal yard,it has sad face victa emblems on air filter, fuel cap etc.started first go [Linked Image]

Does that have a T-shaped pull-start knob? The one like that I bought second-hand in about 1963 had a round knob.

The very early recoil starters indeed have a round knob, but by the early 60's, new ones had the t-bar.

ontop of this, many round ones have at some point in there life been replaced with t-bars during repairs, the starters that once had them can be identified by the bolt on top.

I would love to one day get my hands on the old round handle starter.

my understanding is the round ball handle came out on the automatic, they had a gear instead of the cup,but they also had a down fall which i have two of with this problem.
the cord used in them from factory was a wire cable, over time the wire cut through the guide and then cut through the side of the starter housing so most people changed them to a T handle with rope.

The one in the black and white drawing does indeed look just like mine did. It is a lower profile starter than the one on the mower in the pic, as well as having the bolt or nut (I don't recall which) on top. The starter worked well, but so it should: it was a fairly modern mower when I bought it, and newly refurbished by a dealer. The height adjuster was, of course, horrible.

these are the two types of pull starts,i would have to pull the garage apart to find the ball and wire they are packed away in boxes, the first picture with the nut on top should have the ball and wire

The top one looks like mine, Steve, except for the T knob. That mower was a major increase in luxury when I got it - I'd been using a Victa my father kept at his factory, with a rope pulley and an exposed flywheel. As I recall it had a tin fuel tank cap, painted green, with one or more ventilation holes. It was just a tired old mower in 1963, only kept because it worked.
