I have a Mustang 18 V40 that?s starts, idles but wont rev. Throttle cable moves engine sound changes (sounds like its retarded) but won?t the revs won?t increase. After a few minutes it occasionally increases in RPM but then drops back to an idle.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bruce,
I removed the top muffler clamp and pushed the top of the muffler foward to clear the hole as the bottom clamp looked a bugger to get back on again. No difference in the way it ran.
Confession time.. I couldnt help play a bit and I now have a black and a brown wire near the carby no longer connected to anything. If left open I have spark when cranking if closed no spark. And in the carby there doesent appear to be any float valve. There is a float and a pivot but no valve to stop the flow of petrol which now leaks out of the black primer button, think I let something drop ?

325i,

If you go to the parts list and manuals area you will get information on the carby and engine. yay

As to the carby it appears that you have lost the needle if fuel is leaking from the primer. bigshock

Take the muffler off and check that the port is not blocked on the engine. devilchilli

Thanks Bruce, The exhayst port was 98% blocked ! Cleaned it out and it runs well after 15 minutes
of running.
Now I just have the wires I pulled out to put back !
I will let you know how it goes.

325i,

I would suggest that you replace the muffler as that is what would have cause the blockage in the exhaust port.

Let me know on how you get on. cheers

Bruce,
The muffler seems clear and un blocked. The mower was on loan to a friend and after talking to them it seems they have been mowing the lawns for the last 2 years on the start position which might explain the cause of heavy carbon deposits ? I cant see clearly whwrw the black and brown wires go. One in the carby and the other one ?

325i,

The muffler has mesh inside and it also could be full of carbon which will cause back presure. confused

Both wires should go in the carby. Did you download the carby information from the spare parts & manuals area as it will show you where the wires go? :Wavey:
