I have a 16 yr old Victa Commando 2 stroke mower. The zip cord has broken and I have fitted a new one, but I can't work out how to re-tension the rewind spring. Can anyone assist please?

I don't know about the victa, but in my B&S, you have to tension the spring before you put the cord through the hole. ie. 1)attach held end of spring 2)rotate reel to tension spring 3)insert rope through hole 4)attach handle

I have a victa and had the same trouble: you must wind the thing out before you feed the rope through (ie: turn it in the direction that it would go if you had pulled the cord)you have to do it enough times to take up the lenght of cord tightly otherwise you will end up with loose cord at the end. A piece of wire in a loop can help to pull the cord through the hole: it is easiest to feed it from the 'under' side and out through the casing. hope that helped ( i did mine about a dozen times before i got it right!! but i had no idea when i started)
