Hi Bob,
Yeah...the rear sprocket is almost rounded.
Others are OK.
Seems to be a few of these mowers in Qld/NSW,but not many here in Vic.

What HP motor is on it?? My mate said something about a dead rover with an 8hp motor on it at his place. I was going down there on Sunday, was going to rat the carby off it.

Hi Bob,
It's an 8HP B&S....not sure if it is original.They may have originally had a 5HP on them,but I can't be sure.
My unit is handlebar steer type.

Hi Jim, I have done a bit of research on the 5127 this morning; it seems info, spare parts and manuals for this model is pretty thin on the ground. It seems to have been manufactured in the 1970's. I am sorry I don't have any more for you.

I have had a couple of said machime, only dramas I had on the ones i mowed lkarge yards was trying to buy the flexplates/clutches. I ended up getting one reconditioned in wagga. this was a few years back thoughh.

from street knowledge the colt had the 5 hp, and the ranger was only available with a 8hp engine. the original engine would have been white but allot were replaced because they were a pretty crummy engine if not taken care of. rings and valve seats ejecting were the biggest issues Ive heard of.

as to the drive sprocket i know a old bloke with heaps of new old stock and spares so ill give him a call if you like but whether he would part with it for a reasonable price is questionable. otherwise my local mower shop is pretty good for spares like that so ill see what they have. shipping shouldn't be too much seeing as im only on the other side of Melbourne.

there was also a bloke on ebay from up Queensland somewhere that had heaps of them and use to scrap them. doesn't know is he is still online tho.

If it came too it, you can get sprockets made in any size you want. Would not be real cheap but it would be a fix.


Im off to see my mate with the dead rover on xmas eve. I will have a chat with him about what he wants to do with it and take a few snap shots if its on offer for bits etc.

I have a feeling these mowers were known for their longevity,but comfort & spares may have been iffy.
I want to persist with my old girl,as she usually only runs about 3 times a year & she starts nicely.
One thing I notice is the chain pitch size....seems to be an odd size,so I'm thinking of converting sprockets/chains to a better set up.

Any spares are gratefully received.

Will just run industrial chain of some sort.

I cant see where the front sprocket is.
You might get away with 428 motorbike sprockets. Pit bike stuff is cheap. (id buy a good DID chain though) If both can go one way, have to get the old sprockets machined down and drilled and bolt the new sprockets to one side. So the old sprocket becomes a hub.
Well actually if you know how to use measuring gear you could drill them yourself and machine them up with an oxy or grinder. Its not like they would be spinning fast enough to need good ballance.



Does not have to be the same tooth count, just the same ratio. Smaller sprocket divided by the bigger one.
Usually something like 1 tooth bigger on the small sprocket is the same as 4 teeth smaller on the bigger one. Obviosuly the closer to the same size sprocket the less this would apply. But for a 10-15 front and a 40-50 rear its roughly right.

coming from a machining background (worked with machinists and done a course on it my self) it would be astronomically expensive to got a new sprocket machined or altered.
motorbike bits are a good proposition but as has been said chain pitches are a problem. also mounting would be a issue. i haven't had a chance to ask about bits and pieces but will give my guy a ring after Christmas for you.

ide also look on ebay and see if you can find a block from north queens land. i think he was from beelbird park. possibly named tim but he use to have many of these machines to wreck.

Someone said the sprockets/chains resembled Kart gear.
Mowernut,I know what you mean about mucking around with sprockets....it's possible,but more involved than you'd hope for.
If you can get spares,let me know.I go to North,West & South of Melbourne weekly.

As I said before,it seems there are quite a few of these Rangers in NSW & QLD,but not so many elsewhere.I could have bought 3 mowers from interstate in the last fortnight,but none local.

Jim, can you take a few extra pictures of what goes on in there. I just like to sticky beak.


Take a big heap of pics and get into pulling it apart. It might not want to come apart. Best to be sure before you go forking out cash for bits.

going through the scrap metal pile at the tip last night I found the rear end of a ranger unfortunateloy they had run it over with the front end loader, I do see them occasionally dumped here though.

I'm happy to buy all cogs & chains in good order.Just had a guy construct a few cogs for me,but I'll want more as time goes on...
There's a few of these mowers come up,but mostly in other States.I think many of these early Rangers share the chain drive system.

I have saved the old Rovers on an eBay search...it should show up this morning.

finaly got her apart

Grab what mike has, i asked the guy on ebay and he emailed me some extra pics. Its pretty much junk what he has. Perhaps the steering gear and the steering wheel might be OK. The tyres are stuffed and im not sure how the alloy rims have held up. Theres no gearbox or anything of any sort in the back of it.

Sid,my unit is chain & friction plate drive,with handlebar steering..Your unit is possibly a later version.I have one of them sitting here,& might be looking for parts later.It has a steering wheel,proper axle & solidly formed 2-piece steel frame.
