I am trying to help a mate out who is in charge of outdoor maintenance at his Unit complex and he is in desperate need of an edger as he is Hiring one from Kennards when he needs one which i think is just plain stupid.
Anyway i was thinking if i could knock together an edger from an old whipper snipper? Has anyone done it before and how hard was it to do with mounting the blade etc?
Could i use a largely cut down shaft and modify the end to take a blade?
Lets throw some ideas around.

I'm pretty sure I've seen edger heads for use with combi-systems, so I'd imagine it's do-able, but if it was me, I'd want a run-guide wheel to keep staight as using it would be a bugger. Either gouging the edge of the concrete or chomping the grass to avoid it.
Personally I just use my back-pack brushcutter with a Lil'Juey 4 cord head on it, with 3mm cord. The flexable shaft lets me flip it around at any angle without twisting the engine around over my head.
Works well for me as I'm a lawnie using it in all sorts of terrain.
Still, it's worth a try!!

Josh, i picked up an old edger the other week. I will get some pics of it tomorrow and put them up.
I was going to fix it but its about fit for garden ornament status.
Does not look like it would be hard to replicate. A donor mower for 3 wheels and handle bar. Some scrap steel, a horizontal shaft motor and a visit to an engineering joint. If you can cut, weld, drill and smak things with a big hammer you could knock one up.
I bought a victa tilt a cut, its getting dropped off tomorrow. Easily pick one of those up not running for about $50.
Did you ever get that old Utility going/restored Josh???
Cheers, Bob.
