Hi,whats the best method/sollution for cleaning at best back to new any aluminium components ie,lower half of victa motor-alloy carby off my early victa and villiers etc.many years ago i used oven cleaner and it turned the alloy black(wont do that again)or do i use steel wool/silvo and lots of elbow greese...ken
if you want a really shiny surface then something like brasso and steel wool works well but if you want something a little more durable then i normally use the wire brush that you put in a drill and polish it that way. i do this to the alternators that i recondition and they always come out like new and stay reasonably good for up to 2 years under the bonnet. the finish isn't exactly shiny but more a brushed look, but shows the raw color of the casting. the wheels are only $4 from bunnings and last ages. also useful for stripping paint and cleaning plugs. regards jay
Yeah, really good advice there Jay. Another way I often use is a piece of very course Scotchbrite. I got mine from a floor polishing pad. The method is to rub it in one direction only, and it leaves a satin brushed finish. I learned this little trick from a watchmaker mate of mine, who uses the same method to refinish watch cases.
