Hi, I've recently purchased a rotary hoe, and I have no idea what brand/make/model it is! All I know is that it has a 7.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine on it. Here's a few pictures: Any help would be apprecieated, Matthew

dim03, That machine is a Red Roo RH2000 Rotary Hoe. You can see the latest model on this website under products.

Thanks alot mate, it's a very old model (mine) and i'm just wondering, on one of the main pulleys (see in the 1st pic, it;s attached to a spring at the base of the lHS) the bearings and pulley are very worn. I was wondering where I could purchase a new/reco'ed pulley?
Thanks for your time,
Matthew

I'm putting the hoe together again, however while I can move the axles freely, none of the chains move (they lock up). I think I may have dropped a nut in the works, so would I have to take the chains off to find out what's wrong with it? One more thing, the lever that locks the wheels is really hard to engage, and even though I've lubed it with gear oil, it still won't engage.
Thanks in advance,
Matthew.

dim03, Here is some information on the Rotary Hoe.Just click on them for a larger picture. As to your wheel problem the clutch system is a DOG type and you will have to turn the wheels until it drops in. The large pulley near the motor operates both the Tynes and the wheels. 1.Have you got the top cover off(the one under the motor). 2.You need to look at the chains as you have three that are on the shaft that drives both wheels & tynes as some times they jump if the bushes are worn on that shaft. Can you load a picture when you have the cover off using image shack.

I don;t have a picture as yet (I'll get one first thing in the morning) but I have uploaded a video of when I was cleaning out the gunk and the operation of the gearing before I took the chains out (I didn't touch any of the gears themselves). If you view the video Movie Around the 5 second mark you'll see how the bottom gear worked. That gate thing that slides on the bottom won't slide any more, even though I've cleaned it out and re lubed it. Even if I can manually move it along, I can't use the lever to slide the part. I hope this helps and I apologize if I confused you ! Matty

Video of gearbox Another video, I have bo idea what the last owner put in the box to make the sludge so thick?!? My mates and I were guessing motor oil or transmission oil that's as old as the rotary hoe itself...

Matty, The gunk in the gearbox is what they call a self leveling grease but the thing that I want to ask you was a gasket(like foam rubber) on the top cover of the box? If you have a broken key then that is why it will not slide on the shaft properly. You also have grub screws in the sprockets (Large & smallest). I will give you some more info tonight as I am about to have a meeting. :Wavey:

Gday,
I have decided to clean out all of that sludge and replace the key that is snapped on the bottom shaft. I have removed the end caps on ech side of all of the shafts (and the chains of course) but the shafts are too wide to lever out of the rotary hoe. Is there any way I can remove them for further cleaning/inspection?
PS What oil/lube should I use when I need to put it all back together? Do I need to fill the whole cavity with oil, or just oil the chains and whatnot?
Thanks once again for your help, I really apprecieate it.

Matty, Which front shaft do you mean, is it the one that is under the motor? The oil type is a '00' self levelling grease. The removal of the shafts will require a brass dolly so that you can drive the shaft out. Care has to be taken so that you don't flair the end of the shaft otherwise you will not be able it through the bearing. Did you undo the collar on the bearing (it has two grub screws to hold it on the shaft). You will need to turn it to unlock it from the shaft. When removing the shaft you will have to drive it towards the small sprocket side to get it out.

Thanks alot Bruce, the front shaft I'm talking about is the shaft which the axles are on. That's the shaft that the key is snapped on.

Thanks a lot Bruce, that's a massive help :-). Is there any chance you could get my a copy of the pages to remove the other shafts? That would be excellent.
Matty.

That's OK mate, I understand. BTW is there a password needed for that forum? If there is could you please PM me the password? THanks, and as always I'll try to post up any information I come across, mind you I do specialise in engines (ie lawn mowers and garden machinery).

OK Ive got all of the shafts out and on the workbench, cleaned up, what can I lube it with so I can get the gears working on the bench? And where can I buy auto-levelling grease?

dim03, The first picture of the key does not have a hole for the roll pin(is that the key you used?). The last picture looks like you have damaged the key when putting it in as it appears to be spread. Did you get the old key out? The part number for the old key is 2JR-6006 check with Jim at Red Roo because I think you have the wrong key.

It turned out that a 5 minute job with the angle grinder filed the top down enough so the clutch slides along the keys freely now. And yes, they both have roll pins installed. In the above picture, I have laid out the axle components as I took them apart. According to the Red Roo manual, the round shim goes in between the sprocket and DOG clutch. I fitted it as they said, and the clutch and sprocket don't lock. Is that how it is meant to be installed?
