thank you for your comments at the moment im working on a kirby 2.5 hp of a 45/17 complete.it was given to me by and older gentlman last week. On inspection it was clear the fuel system from the tank down was all varnished up from old leaded fuel. Not been started in a dozen years carby was completly seized acetone helps to remove stuck on varnish with a hand full of 12 mm nuts. On the up side the handle bar chrome is sound and from close inspection the cylinder cutter and bed knife look like thay were done but never used still sharp to touch this mower was under a house for years but will live anther day under my house some pics attached steve...

Steve,

That will look really good when you put a coat of paint on it but I did notice in the picture you are missing this [Linked Image] which you will really need to be installed before you start running the motor if cutting the lawn.

It is listed on the store HERE.

Good luck with the restro. cheers2

Regards,

Bruce

hi all here is some pics of the kirby in bits i have put a full carby kit in as system was seized with old leaded fuel welsh plug brass inserts ect like new now. A new set of rings, seals, and gaskets. Top ring was stuck in piston not sure if that was due to lack of oil change. A lot of carbon on cylinder head inlet valve has a bit of a raised surface on top not sure if its from heat so im replacing it ex valve a light grey color on top with heaps of carbon. Head bolts not tight contact points nice and flat even facing. muffler full with carbon deposits no lip on bore or on the valve face so for an engine that seems to have had not much use it had a lot of carbon built up i have probly spent about 8 hours to get this far cheers steve.

Looking good Steve. Have you done anything about the gasket for the water-drain button on the bottom of the float bowl? Mine used to drip, and I didn't see a convenient way to fix it so I put up with it. Just one of the many things I hated about that engine.

hi! grumpy yer your right, about the drain leaking, in the past i have used a later model bowl without the drain but this 1 dosent leak not to say it wont tho the other area where the kirby, has a leak problem is where the breather pipe pushes onto a loose fitting made of aluminium i solder that onto the breather plate no more oil leaks regards steve.
