I'm pulling apart some of my machines to tidy them up a bit. I was looking at some of the parts that bolt on these engines, like throttle cable brackets, engine covers, etc...

I was thinking about dropping them off at my local chrome guy to get a bit of 'bling' happening on these motors.

I'm wondering if I'm going to run in to any major rust issues. I guess if the machines are kept dry, and clean (free of dirt/dust) as much as possible, the chrome bits will stay rust free?

I'd also like to have some of the engine cover/panels and fuel tanks re-powder coated. Probably also the actual carts/frames/chassis of the machines

Looking for anyone that has any experience with this? Just after some advice smile

So far as steel parts are concerned, good-quality chrome plating actually involves three layers: copper, then nickel, then chrome. The combination provides reasonable corrosion protection (mostly due to the copper layer). However I believe it is possible to paint them with lacquer over the chrome to get a further improvement. You could ask a paint expert. So far as the coloured bits are concerned I'd be surprised if the original finish was powder-coated: last I heard they were just spray-painted. Deejay (Darryl) has had some experience with powder-coating some bits of his beloved SB - hopefully he'll chime in with some better information on this option.

Hi James, and a big warm welcome to the forum. It's great to have you aboard. grin
James, in the early 60's my family was heavily involved in go-karting (still in the fledging stage at that time) and I can remember that my uncle came back from a trip to USA with a brand spanking new McCullock MC75 that had heaps of chrome on the cowling etc. and looked fantastic, really easy to keep clean too.....

As grumpy has said, the chroming process will help protect the metal providing that it is not left out in the weather for any protracted period. Any good quality auto polish should keep it looking perfect (and give the chrome some protection as well.) grin
As far as powder-coating is concerned, the finish is also very durable and can be done easily in a range of colours.
I had the cylinder reel, clutch cone and shaft done, as grumpy has said on my Scott Bonnar. I keep it clean using auto polish once a year. You need to do some preparation work before hand though, ie. cleaning all dirt, oil and grease off, then sand or seed blasting all of the old paint
to leave a thoroughly bare surface.
It is imperative that once you complete the blasting, you get the parts to the powder coat shop ASAP as just the moisture in the air will start the rusting process, right before your very eyes! wink
Remember, any good finish is only as good as the preparation done before hand.
James, could you please post some "before" and "after" pics of your project, as all our members love to see 'em. smile

Once again, :welcome:
cheers2
