hi every one i sold a mower the other day and got a talon surefire as part of the deal.i havn't had a look inside it yet but ithink it might have either broken a piston or a rod.it turns over a bit then locks up ,its been sending heaps of oil into the air filter, its not good but there are no holes in the crankcase.i was wondering if you can get parts for these easy,or depending on the damage try and find another engine, or is it worth it. i would have sent some pics of the one i sold but forget how,i'll work it out later thanks micka
I had a talon surefire for a week,I thought it was heavy and slow to cut with, Joe has the right idea fit a 3.5 B&S motor if you can. There not worth spending too much money on.
i fitted my last complete 3.75 to a flymo and kept the suzuki of it to put on a rover. i spent this arvo in the spare parts to make up another briggs, ive got a few briggs pistons that came out engines not burning oil but when i checked the ring gap in a few other blocks that wernt worn the gap was too much so i'll get new rings through the week, do the valves and fit it on the talon. i havn;t heard a real lot of good about talons either so i wont go any further with it. i agree with gmax about them being heavy, it was just that it was nackered in the motor so i thought i'd grab it cheers micka
I would be interested to know what motor on the Talon it is a clone of. I was having a look one in the $2 shop (aka Bunnings) and a lot of parts on the present model look suspiciously like those fitted to one of the cheaper Victa's When I look at both the Victa's and Rovers you see at the $2 store I keep thinking how the mighty have fallen.
Hi everyone, I totally agree Greg, every second mower / wippersnipper sold is Chinese rubbish. Briggs doesnt sell a decent domestic engine anymore! The 480 ect that they sell at Bunnings are now cast in china. Im not to sure about these new ohv rover engines either (if anyone knows anything about them please inform me!) As to the talon, I think the engines are modelled on Briggs Stratton (apart from the carby). Regards Jay
Yeah I while I was at the $2 store with the old man I was looking at a petrol powered mulcher to get an idea at what is at the lower-end of the market. Much to my shock the Talon ones were about $650. But yeat I have seen a Masport one with a Honda GX at a specialist mower retailer for around $900 and other units with a B&S I/C engine so its no brainer for me, if I was to buy new. Look I have been burnt with a Ryobi petrol powered blower, its the worst thing I have ever brought. After carby rebuild/clean she now runs better than it did new but I wish I had put my money down on a Tanaka. Buying cheap is just not worth the pain.
i've only got as far as splitting the crankcase on the talon, nothing wrong in there so i'll have a look at the top end soon, but apart from external stuff i'd agree its just about a replica briggs engine cheers micka
G'day, I have a talon blower, now I will admit its no sthil but it starts 1st pull and runs well with lots of power. Its done about 40 hrs work and is still going. For $99 you cant beat it in my opinion! Regards jay
I dont know about the mowers but i have 3 Talon chainsaws . 1 x 38 cc 35 cm bar and 2 x 55 cc 50 cm bars .. living out in the bush and only having wood heating they cop a fair workout .. all three saws have seen 2 and half winters so far and apart from sharpening the chains i havent had to touch them .. will relace the bars before next winter but they start first go .. run for hours on end and have caused me no problems at all .. touch wood
