I've inherited an old Scott Bonnar 4-stroke, which has been going like a beauty, but the handle broke off the started cord the last time I started it, and the cord has disappeared somewhere into the guts of the machine. I've removed the bit where the spring is held, but the chord isn't there. It didn't fly off anywhere, so I'm assuming it's somewhere inside the mower: any clues about how to retrieve it so I can either replace or repair it?

Hi pbk918, and a big warm welcome to the forum. yay
You may have to remove the whole cowling to find out where the broken cord has dissappeared to, hoping this video will help you. It contains all the info on B&S starter cord replacement including replacing the cord and handle wink

This is a relatively simple process, but you have to be VERY careful when doing this. The spring is long, under some tension and has sharp edges. Anytime you are dealing with the manual rewind starter assembly, there is risk of the spring coming out and possibly injuring yourself or others. If you do not feel comfortable performing this repair, I strongly suggest visiting one of the authorized dealers in your area and have them do this for you. wink

Thanks for the videos. My model, however, looks different: the spring pull assembly is a separate bit bolted to the side of the motor. I've taken it off, and the spring is still coiled nicely inside, but I can't see the cord anywhere.

Hi pbk918 it sounds like you have a Tecumseh engine on the Scott Bonnar. Here is the engine that I think you have in this video.
