Hi guys,

I am in the process of starting a resto on the old Scott Bonnar.

From what I can understand this mower (Model: 450810) is an adaptation of the model 45, but with the different handle bars.

The motor on this is currently not running and I am weighing up my options as to whether I should rebuild the 2.5hp Briggs engine, or swap it out for something else.

I noticed that Deejay has used a G100 Honda engine but the local honda dealer here in adelaide only has a GX100 and these are nearly $600!

Are the G100 discontinued?

Ideally I would like to keep costs to a minimum whilst providing myself with a reliable mower.

I am off to the shop to get myself some jade green hammertone paint.

Photos on the way.

Thanks in advance!

polizei,

You could rebuild the B&S for about 1/3 of the cost of a Honda (I know Darryl would go for Honda) if you want to keep it original. The B&S engine does not really have to do a lot of work so you would get a good life out of the rebuild. cheers2

Hi polizei, and a big warm welcome to the forum. It is great to see that you are restoring a Scotty Model 45, once complete it will give you hours of mowing pleasure.

Re your query on the G100, yes mate, they were discontinued I believe in late 2001 or early 2002; however parts are readily available (tho mine hasn't needed any).

My reasoning for choosing a Honda replacement engine was that at that time (1999), there were very few second hand Scotty 45's on the market and a brand new machine was $1600+ so that spending $525 on a new Honda engine seemed to be well justified (as well as the reliability factor and "first pull" starting)
I chose not to re-build the Briggs because it was a "lemon"
and always gave me hassles since new!!
In your case however, I tend to agree with Bruce, if your engine is in reasonable nick, a re-build is the way to go, and will be a lot cheaper for you.

As regards to painting, the Galmet "Jade Green" is lighter in shade than the original, but is an excellent product seeing that the original colour is not available....
As for the Briggs; "Motospray" Automotive Refinishes have an orange engine enamel that is almost identical to the original Briggs and Stratton colour.

Best of luck with it and we can't wait to see your photos.
