Hi all,
Is the plastic starter switch which has the battery cables attached directly (basically a manual solenoid) the same as the starter switch fitted to some TE20 tractors. The part number for Ferguson are Massey Ferguson - 181679M91, 181679M1, 181679V1.

The dimensions look pretty much the same but I don’t have one to compare in person.

The switch on my mower has stopped working and it doesn’t appear to be easily disassembled for cleaning/checking.

Hi Damon,
You can still get the manual type solonoids but they are a lot more expensive than a standard motorcycle solonoid. With the motorcycle ones you just need a push button switch to fit in the existing starter button hole to activate the solonoid. Very easy to set up

I've sold old ride on mowers Norm with a working solenoid and switch but no engine for less than the eBay price for solenoid and switch.

buy from China and get free post.

Yes you could also use the plastic switch or the Massey Ferguson . one but the tractor one is about $40.
The plastic switch needs to be of good quality as some are low amps ,Look for a clearly stated DC rating, for example “continuous 100–200 A, cranking 300–500 A at 12 V”; using it to crank a mower starter is only sensible if the cranking rating comfortably exceeds the mower’s peak draw (often around 100–150 A

Cheers
Max.

Thanks for the replies NormK and Maxwestern.

Turns out the problem was poor contact, the cable lugs were contacting on the nuts rather than the posts and there was a fair amount of oxidation on the nuts. I replaced the nuts, added some washers and the switch is working well again.
