A mate brought over his 2 speed Honda with a GXV140 motor on it yesterday for me too look at. I had this running about 12 months ago and he hadn't used it since then. I tried starting it and no sign of a kick from it. Starter fluid, still not a kick, new plug still nothing. I have told him it has run its race and needs the motor replaced but before I go ahead with this anybody have any other ideas?

Plug out, rocker cover off, check flywheel keyway, valves rocking at TDC?, valve clearances etc. if all this is ok and it still wont start read it it's last rights then shoot it

Sounds similar to a problem with a Honda which turned out to be due to the oil switch detecting crappy "lubricant" and stopping the sparks department.

Thanks BT, I figure it is dead, I have had a few of these 140's that end up exactly like this.

Hi MM, no oil switch on these 140's , I think it is dead

Hi Norm,

I think I do the same , new plug ,check the compression with a tester ,then flywheel key , disconnect cut out wire ,try another coil.
or clean the magnets and coil core and the earth for the coil to the block.

G'day Norm,

I've had too many mowers that run good them next time you get the mower out it wont run but has spark with the
plug out, then I replace the coil and it fixes the problem.

I have a lot of spares so I don't mind changing a coil even if it's just to rule out a coil problem,.

As we know. When the spark plug is removed, the ignition coil can sometimes generate a visible or audible spark across the spark plug gap without the load of the plug. This is known as a "no-load" spark test. Since there's no spark plug in the cylinder, the spark has less resistance and can appear more easily.

When the spark plug is in place, the ignition coil has to produce a spark strong enough to jump the gap between the center and side electrodes of the plug under compression. If the spark isn't strong enough or the coil is weak, the spark might be insufficient to jump the plug gap when under compression.

Back in the early nineties I had a new Stihl chainsaw (a few months old),it had spark with the plug out but wouldn't fire with plug in ,put a new coil in and it was running as new again.

Your Honda may not be a coil problem but if it's got compression and fuel I like to rule out a coil problem.

Cheers
Max.

Hi Max,
I am trying to remember but I think this one might be the one I put a Chonda flywheel on and I had to use the Chonda coil. This was some years ago. The Honda coil would not work with the Chonda flywheel

Yeah I've had a lot of Chonda coils fail Norm.

As we know some coil cores are E core with North South North magnets and some coil cores are C shaped with 2 magnets that
each magnet is North South.
