I am building a motorized wheel barrow using an old Deckson self propelled slasher to move my firewood up to the back woodshed. Not sure what motor I will use but probably a GXV160 I have here
If your going up a steep set of stairs a small motor will move a great load but it's all in the gearing and that gearing may not be slow enough, it just depends on the incline and surface you are using this on.
I made a ride on mower pull heavy loads with only 5 hp ,it will tow 600 lbs up a 15 degree dirt slope ,I had to reduce the engine pulley size and increase the gearbox pulley size and it has a 5 speed gearbox.
Yes Max, I did build that one a few years ago, works well but it is a bit slow so I thought I would build this one, as a wheelbarrow it is more likely to sell than a Deckson slasher
I hadn't seen any for that price Max, everything I saw was closer to $2000. I was thinking of buying one but when I walked past the Deckson sitting here I thought why not use that, chuck a motor on it and away we go. Has bogged down a bit today because I had to alter the engine plate to take the GXV. The existing studs were for an 8hp motor and I didn't have one here I could use My only concern with this Deckson drive is will it get enough friction on the cone to drive it up the ramps that are 3 steps high about 21 inches of climb on 9 foot long planks
That was the price with free shipping Norm ,you can buy them cheaper but then you have to work out how much shipping will cost on top.
They had a few sales on lately.
I guess if you have a problem with the drive line slipping and you don't need to use this cart too far from the house ,two 2Hp electric motors could be used to a ride on mowers transaxle with an extension cord but it's just as easy to use a petrol engine.
Just an update on my barrow, it works exceptionally well, easy to handle a big load of wood and the GXV160 has plenty of power at low revs and the zero turn front wheel makes it very easy to manouver around, very happy with it and means I can get the wood up to the back shed hopefully for years to come
That's good that the wheelbarrow works well ,I wonder if the carby gums up over summer when it's not used as I've had that problem when I don't use a mower over winter.
Hi Max, Always possible , I put another carby on it yesterday, I have had the Honda motor sitting here for probably 5/6 years. The bloke I bought it off said the thought there was something wrong withe valves or cam. I never bothered looking at it till I decided to put this motor on this barrow setup because unlike all the other GXV's this one has a completely flat underside so it could sit on the plate with only a small hole for the shaft in it. When I started it up it was backfiring and would only run on full choke. Put another carby on it and it runs and starts first pull. Genuine Honda carbys seem to be able to sit for quite a while and start no problems it is the Chondas and Briggs that seem to have these problems with sitting. Anyway I will give it a start every so often, I seem to chase firewood at any time of the year or whenever some becomes available
I have used this barrow probably 15 times now, it is a beautiful thing and with the 160 motor on it it powers up the ramp at ease with the motor idling. Super happy with it and the old Deckson drive is just so rugged and tough you would not find anything built like this ever again
