hey i have a Rover shredder 95213 5hp and really like how sturdy it is and the way it chips the wood. i have a problem it takes about 15 pulls and mix of petrol and start ya bastard to get going.. then once its going it runs fine, itll run until the tank is bone dry... which is about 2 hours give or take. any way i have a feeling the motor is on its way out so im enquiring as to wether anybody could point me in the direction of a more modern minimum 5hp verticle shaft motor that would fit in this beauty, it doesnt matter if its a briggs or a generic brand motor just something that would fit the bolt pattern and turn those three heavy blades underneath. thanks for your help in advance im new here and dont know how this forum works yet.. cheers.
If the motor has good compression ,it may need a service to start easily again, set the points ,carby kit possibly.
For the engine replacement the problem is you need a crank with 25.4 mm or 1 inch then on the end 7/8 inch or 22.2 mm.
These motors are found on a few mowers one being the Rover super four 53 self propelled from the seventies and eighties, the later Rovers have a red base and black motor with electronic ignition ,some of the early Rovers are 171 cc or 4 hp but you want the 187cc 5 hp motor ,early ones are points ignition.
I've put a 5 hp Quantum motor on a Rover super four 53 self propelled before and it worked well and that Quantum had the stepped crank but I don't remember what mower it came from as I had a hundred old 4 stroke mowers that I scrapped and not many Quantum engines had the stepped crank. The quantum with the stepped crank should fit the shredder but you'd have to see if the wider plastics get in the way if so you'd remove the plastic tank and fit a fuel tank somewhere else.
For me to find a good Quantum with a stepped crank would take too long it would probably be quicker to find a worn out quantum with the stepped crank then find a good quantum motor with the 1 inch crank and then swap the cranks over.
The Rover super four 53 self propelled I'd usually buy not running and were $50 or under.
I don't think the old Rover Shredders are worth fixing these days as a new 6 hp shredder is $800. and I see late model shredders thrown out on hard rubbish that are 6 hp and more that have done a lot less work than old Rover shredders.
