Hi all, Long time lurker here.

I've just inherited a HRU215 which is in mint condition except the 2 speed tranny is on the way out.
My question is has anyone fitted a HRU216 3 speed gearbox to a HRU215 mower before or knows whether it can be easily done?

TIA
Nick

Hi Nick.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME. they are garbage and a disgrace to the Honda name end of story I will make no further comments on this. The 2 speed was a better unit

"Yes, Norm, and most people haven’t had much luck with the gearboxes lasting on Honda self-propelled models."

Probably better off spending around $300. for a new Self Propelled that comes with a one year warranty .

The Honda Self Propelled mowers don't look like they would sell well in the second hand market..

Cheers
Max.

Besides Max the op said it was a 215 which has the GXV140 motor not the GXV160 which is a much better motor Better to pull the motor and put it on a lighter body and just use as a push motor

Thanks for the responses. I'm happy to stick with self propelled as this mower will be used domestically on large lawn areas where self propelled is enjoyable.

The motor and base are in such nice condition so I'm willing to tinker. I guess I'm curious because the design around the rear axle is so close to a 216 and if can be a easy straight swap out of the older 2 speed, I'd source the 3 speed for that extra speed in 3rd gear.

Well good luck to you, best I can say is they are garbage, but up to you. Not much point in coming here asking for advice being told something is no good then saying you are going to go ahead anyway

I'm guessing you have had bad experiences with these gearboxes? My old man had has one working fine for years and years. On the other hand I get it... if they regularly break during contractor use then definitely a justified opinion.

However... I look after things....not going to be used for heavy use and if it dies then they are easier to source than an old 2 speed box.

My original question wasn't asking about the quality of these gearboxes but if one would happily fit as a replacement for the 2 speeder in a hru215.

I'm happy to try this but I just thought I'd reach out to people that might know or have tried it first.

I refuse to repair or replace them, the 2 speed was a strong gearbox. Had one here last week, all I did was cut the cable off with a grinder, remove the tailshaft and the clutches in the wheels and said to the owner see how you go pushing it because they weigh 48kgs
