sad result today.. would not start... so back into 'theory' lessons. took the muffler off poked my finger in the hole (spark plug out of course) and felt the top valve rod move... so I had it backwards. set them again and she's off like a rocket again. does want to stall when with the cutter engaged I hit some dirt, but I back off/out quick smart.
some little backfiring which I will ignore for now.
of course I spoke too soon... the kill switch (not the one for the coil, but the one that comes from the key to the 'rotor' had come off. and now having fun and games with different coils (of three I have) and different spark plugs. so it is a spark issue.
and to make matters more complicated, the coils , esp. the cheap ones from the land where they are made, can go bad simply by having the plug gap wrong, or perhaps a pinched spark lead, or perhaps leaving the kill switch lead off it. this channel had one on all that... ruling out all possibilities, which is what I have to do around here. https://www.youtube.com/@TheRepairSpecialist
and
and a new spark plug which is the same as the old one RJ19LM , cause one of the new ones had no spark.
and try joining a spark lead to one of the new coils which had the lead too short (my mistake on purchase).
I actually got the motor to run with an old coil which had the lead end off , bare wire, and an alligator clipped wire to join to the spark plug.
so I managed to cobble together the working coil (with the bad lead but that still worked with wires and alligator clamps) to a lead from a coil which did not work, a long lead. turns out that these leads also screw in like the chainsaw ones, though I had to destroy the plastic around it, I can use J B Weld to reform that. still coughing , backfiring and not running well. more to do. ordered another of the coil, at least these old ones had a parts number stamped on them, however all the ones on ebay seem to have the shorter leads. mine as it stands comes from the right (carby side) out of the coil, as do these ebay ones , with the same parts number, all the way under and round the valve cover. that seems better from a melted spark lead point of view. (I did it again today, on the muffler). also I found a loose thing that may or not come from somewhere, any ideas if relevant appreciated. always gets tricky the older the motor (and 'mechanic') and the newer the replacement parts. I note too the new coils on ebay all have a protective sheath at their plug end.. I do not recollecting seeing those before and the lack of which probably contributed to my 'melting moments'.
one ought to do more homework.. found a good site. https://www.partstree.com/models/21...tric-starter-governor-spring-ignition-1/ and the right part, with lovely and in my experience necessary shielding. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/385541936318?hash=item59c41714be:g:LRoAAOSw8X1kNhRd&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8IpEyTQHBkAiabdVarKUpu2hE9emvMbCry7jRZHwyUKIcWlWFeu%2FnZiBAN1IBmXmYCwqnMhxoKjukdVC%2FrHoSQjZXm9YkB0Tu8lORkOIk2t424knlaFx1lawQGXscpsUddMa%2BZADhoV%2Fp2FJrCxVeEmkRuhjOyCzFfqCDeqiTZOq9JgvM7Iaygwdq8IkwPlBUqInGJjU7NOu3bCE%2BL2Yh9x2DIEho6Y3fUHiO8yZ7CtDiSrn%2FXVmr6XnpT%2BCi48c%2F3aCaXsvistYDXddy4MtK%2FNzAlswrFVfbryaFMrY0DSExWi1ZvGjB3kUlvjYwG9y4A%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8Seyef2YQ
just an update, I got the mower going, after doing the valves and replacing almost everything. perseverance pays, and you learn lots along the way. main lesson was to correctly match the correct solenoid (ignition coil) correctly.
